Window coverings for sliding doors

I have a window dilemma.

We want to put a large, 4m wide window/sliding door into our family room, so it opens up to the garden. However, we also need to put occasional overnight guests up in that room, so would need to be able to block out the light.

Given how occasional this will be, we don't really want the expense of integral blinds, and I'm not convinced curtains would work for a variety of reasons (mainly cost of curtains that wide, and the space they would take up to edges once opened), but I'm not sure what else to do.

Does anyone else have any ideas on what might work in this situation?

Popping back to say thanks for all the super helpful suggestions. It really made me think about what's important for me and what isn't.

The project is still very early stage (the windows are only part of it - expect many more threads as I get my head around it all!), so plenty of time to think it all through, but I think I'm favouring roller blinds for now - cost effective, simple, and easily hidden when not in use.

I don't think I would have considered it without your prompting, Notname, so thank so much for the inspiration!

I was told we couldn't recess mount tracks as we had a steel joist over the wide patio door opening. Def get this checked out at this early stage so your architect can plan for it in the designs.

Another type to consider is Luxaflex blinds that go up rather than down.
I have them elsewhere in the house but not in the kitchen breakfast/ living room area
Personally I'm happy with my roller blinds.
My doors and windows are between 4 and 5 metres wide. I have 4 separate sections of blinds iykwim.

@QuantumWeatherButterfly
Yes this is what we had but in dark grey. Also upgraded the rail to black and had the pull rod as opposed to cord etc.

Don't go for split stacking and make sure the stack is the side with the fixed pane of glass. They sit neatly in line with the inset wall and look like new despite strong sun every morning

Well thank you Quantum as I’ve been meaning to do something about the windows for ages (they’ve been in nearly 2 yrs!) and it was your thread that promotes me to finally think about it and price up blinds. DH reckons it will be poss to drill into the ceiling of the recess, tho there is steel in there too somewhere. Am currently sat in the kitchen absolutely blinded by the low sun, so I really should get on with ordering!

Could you get the travel blackout fabric some people use in baby's rooms when they go away? You can cut it to size and it sticks on with suction cup thingys!
We have some for a window in the living room that is too small for a blind for when guests stay over. I had to cut it to size, but even the small one was quite big, so a couple could cover the space.
