Water softener

When we moved in to this house it had a water softener. It uses blocks of salt. It’s quite nice having less limescale and I imagine it’s been very good for the boiler dishwasher and washing machine. However, it’s gone on the blink. Kaput. It is very expensive to repair. Around £500! I could cover this with savings but I’m not sure it’s worth it or I wondered if maybe wise mumsnetters have an alternative idea?

I'd think at that price, you'd be better of replacing with a new one. Somebody started a thread on this yesterday - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/3912385-Water-Softener

Absolutely. We live in a rental in a hard water area. It was today when I told my husband that the first thing I'll buy for any new house will be a water softener. The loos are a nightmare.
