Period homes ruined by 'modernisation'

Anyone seen any gems of unrestored period properties? I don't mind the era of a house, so long as it's good quality and has good features. Every age be it Georgian or 50s Modern has its virtues.

I saw this beauty online a couple of years ago, and cheap sold for £200k in 2015. Art deco, really strongly so too.

Saw it back on the market, and it's absolutely ruined. Looks like the kind of place you'd think of a car dealer living in Grin

And now they want £695k ! What a joke.

Biscuit to whoever 'decorated' that first house.

Rebelwithallthecause · 17/05/2020 17:22

@user3274826 yes where on earth do people get chairs with massive rings on the back of them?!

And why?!

And why shiny floors?

Rebelwithallthecause · 17/05/2020 17:25

Love the sunburst stained glass window

Hate the tarmac drive

highmarkingsnowmobile · 17/05/2020 17:35

That's just awful! The whole thing!

spacepoppers · 17/05/2020 17:41

Looks grim. But I did a local search and ended up finding this Beauty www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-65730717.html
Absolutely stunning

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 17/05/2020 17:45

Oh what a shame that's painful to look at 😭

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/05/2020 17:55

I think the problem is it is neither one thing nor the other
If you take away the furnishing and they replaced the tiled floor with a darker wooden flooring I don’t think it would be too bad.
I think they have tried to keep the bones of the house, the windows etc but the furniture and tiled floors just don’t go and the tarmac needs removing. It looks like they have taken the monochrome look too far with a black driveway.

If they had furnished it with a nod towards Art Deco It could have looked amazing but although tiles in hallway/kitchens and bathrooms are practical in living rooms etc it all gets a bit tacky.

sbplanet · 17/05/2020 17:59

@spacepoppers Wow! Fab. But wtf is pic 28? :D

ImBritishNotEnglish · 17/05/2020 17:59

@spacepoppers See this is where tastes differ. The house in your link from the outside, looks like a haunted house. The inside is charming enough and if it comes with the two cute boys (minus the dad), even better (I have two lovely nieces around that age, one looking over my shoulder).

Spacecudet · 17/05/2020 18:07

That is such a shame, they have ruined it. the monochrome is so tacky!

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/05/2020 18:11

I think it was used in an episode of Dr Who

thefemaleJoshLyman · 17/05/2020 18:20

695k in Pontllanfraith!?!

spacepoppers · 17/05/2020 18:21

@sbplanet it was used in an episode of Dr Who, who is posing with what I assume are his sons.
It does look a bit haunted, but so much space and character, and alllllll those acres

sbplanet · 17/05/2020 18:23

I'd rather have less space and seaviews. :)

so agree OP. I recently moved to a 1930s house still with - parquet flooring, picture rails, 1930s fireplaces and 1930 original doors. They had converted the garage to a utility room but had not destroyed the essence of a 1930s house. The light fittings and the bathroom were also 1930s style.
I love it as it is - will never return when I sell it to see a if the new owners have 'gutted' it with a tacky white-out that some people seem to prefer.
