Repainting kitchen cupboards - paint recommendations

DanielleHirondelle · 16/05/2020 17:49

My kitchen cupboards are painted MDF/pine and in desperate need of repainting. Ideally they need replacing but that's not possible right now. I'm thinking of a grey/blue colour, but firstly want to choose the right paint. I would appreciate any recommendations!

seems like there's the same threads started on there every day... If you search you'll find several on this topic

I've done mine in valspar satin wood or eggshell (can't remember) with a difficult surface primer. To be honest 6 months in there are some chips that need touching up so if you're going to paint be prepared to touch up.

I have heard good things about frenchic paint and would probably use this if I were to do it again. See the frenchic fan forum on Facebook as they have loads of examples on there.

Thank you @WhyDoesItAlways, I'll have a look at frenchic.

I was just about to start a thread on this! I have heard that tikkarila (sp) do a fantastic primer to get any surface ready for painting. I am wanting if anyone has done this themselves. How long did it take and what are the pit falls to look out for? I am pretty confident that I could do the doors well but worry about the casing.

V33 is a fabulous paint. Their cupboard paint is 2nd to none. It's water based and as long as you follow the instructions, exactly, you can't go wrong. Been 7 years since I did my kitchen cupboards and they're still looking good.

@LoveSatsumas thank you :) My doors are going to take a lot of prep but I'm looking for a project to get stuck into over the summer. What colour did you use? The range is quite limited but I think the anthracite will work well.

@Piapea thank you also!

I used farrow and ball, but no great colour recommendations for blue-grey. What I will say is that liquid sandpaper was a godsend (no dust) and I used those little foam rollers for a smooth finish.

DanielleHirondelle · 18/05/2020 07:44

I've not used liquid sandpaper before @nearlynermal, thanks for the tip!

I did mine in White but have seen ones in Anthracite, beautiful.
It really is a great paint. I did 3 or 4 thin coats, applied with a small varnish roller. No drips or runs and only 40 minutes between coats. The downside was having to be careful not to knock or catch them for 3 weeks but the result was excellent.
I don't work for them by the way, just a very happy customer.
Good luck with whatever you use

Please don't paint your cupboards with Frenchic. Despite the claims chalk paint really is not suitable for kitchen cupboards which need regular cleaning.. And it's not as easy to achieve a fine finish with as people claim. Great for things like chests of drawers etc, but kitchens no.

DanielleHirondelle · 18/05/2020 20:59

Thank you again @LoveSatsumas :)

Thanks also @YouHurtMeSoMuch - I do need something hardwearing that'll clean easily (dogs!).

DSis is a painter specialising in kitchen units. She uses Holman Paint company for supplies. When she advised me on doing mine I bought the otex primer and the fassilux paint, the company tinted them to a colour I'd chosen from a different paint range.

A lot of prepatation, cleaning and sanding is the key. I didn't find the paints particularly easy to work with but the finish is good and has been hard wearing. The company are probably good for advice, I can't remember if I did 2 coats primer and one of paint or the other way round.

I’ve just been given a sample pot of Farrow & Ball Stiffkey Blue for my lounge. I love it so much I am planning using it for the kitchen cupboards too.
B&Q colour match it so I am going to use Valspar not F&B because it’s cheaper...

Mmsnet101 · 20/05/2020 19:30

Wilkinsons own paint is v cheap and fantastic, no prep needed.

Thanks all:)
