Decorating trends that won’t last?

Just for fun as I’m bored, I also live in rented so don’t really have much choice on decor but interested to hear your thoughts.

I feel possibly that very dark wall colours and dark woodwork might be the next thing to get a bit dated.

Maybe painted and high gloss kitchen cupboards?

Feel free to add yours Grin

'industrial' style, like metal framed tables with reclaimed scaffold planks

Winnipegdreamer · 07/05/2020 13:29

Thought of another although not really decorating. The obsession with having everything open plan I think may die out a little too 🤷🏼‍♀️

Coloured kitchens. A shame because I love them...but I think white will be the only colour that doesn't date (not gloss).

bluefoxmug · 07/05/2020 13:45

steel splash backs.
because they are a bugger to keep clean.

Africa2go · 07/05/2020 13:55

I think high gloss kitchens became dated years ago.

I think everything has a shelf life - I think the key is to invest in furniture / bits that you absolutely love irrespective of trends. If you need to repaint a dark wall, change copper fittings etc, its not the end of the world or expensive.

Having said that, there are so many companies that can change big things now - respray a kitchen, re-upholster a chair etc, that even those things can be adapted to trends.

APurpleSquirrel · 07/05/2020 14:01

That's interesting, I agree about open plan - at least complete open plan. This crisis has probably shown many people that you need separate rooms for specific purposes (office etc).

YorkshireTea86 · 07/05/2020 15:38

Everybody putting panelling everywhere. Our house has the it from the last time it was a trend and I hate it. Repainting it is a pain.

Bristolbitsandbobs · 07/05/2020 15:54

@yorkshireTea86

That’s a good point. I keep looking at it and thinking how nice it looks, but I think it will date.
I am NEVER doing another renovation after this, not sure I’ll ever redecorate Grin got to be timeless!

WeAreAllDoomedITellYa · 07/05/2020 15:56

Grey. Please let everything being grey die out.

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/05/2020 16:02

Do some people redecorate every times a new trend happens?! Talking about it being a shame something is no longer current because you really like it but can't possibly have it now... Confused

Toilenstripes · 07/05/2020 16:14

Furry cushions and anything with rose gold

Toilenstripes · 07/05/2020 16:16

The classics never go out of style, same with clothes.

BruceAndNosh · 07/05/2020 16:17

Grey window frames.
They will eventually date a house to 2010 to 2020 just like the dark brown ones scream 1980s.
And they are very expensive to change!

BruceAndNosh · 07/05/2020 16:19

@Thisismytimetoshine I redecorate when it starts to look tatty. By then it's WELL out of fashion

Chinesetakeawaay · 07/05/2020 16:19

Apart from white walls everything will date

Bristolbitsandbobs · 07/05/2020 16:20

White walls it is then!

Abreadsandwich · 07/05/2020 16:21

I remember reading a few years ago about open plan being "on trend" as if it was as easy to change soft furnishings or painting a wall! Kirsty allsopp is forever banging on about knocking down walls on LLL and creating "family space" but in reality it might work if you need to keep an eye on toddlers/young kids when you're cooking or in the kitchen but once kids get older I think separate spaces work better, and as pp said with more people wfh.

PippaPegg · 07/05/2020 16:23

That faux weathered beach hut style flooring.

Metro tiles.

Huge jungle print wallpaper.

Silver everything!

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/05/2020 16:25

You mean my metro tiles are out again? I've had them since the first go round 😂.

PenfoldsFive · 07/05/2020 16:29

I'm trying to choose a paint colour for my window frames and front door and at the moment three houses near me are all painting in shades of mid grey. I don't mind it outside but inside that battleship colour makes me feel very depressed.

PinkMic · 07/05/2020 16:54

Grey walls (internal and external) with silver velour soft furnishings and mirrored/crystal furniture. I don't get it now.

Geometric line patterns and animal pictures.

I deliberately chose metro tiles as they remind me of decades ago, so don't really think of them as a modern trend ;-)

Africa2go · 07/05/2020 16:57

We've had just white walls in our open plan kitchen diner with a grey kitchen for 3 years now but honestly, ready for a bit of colour now!!

At the end of the day, people don't live in show homes so it doesn't have to always be bang on trend. Its a home! Have things that you like, that make you happy!

memememoi · 07/05/2020 17:57

As lovely as it looks, I think that tilled walls in the herringbone pattern are going to age badly.

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/05/2020 17:59

To be fair, they look shite now.

memememoi · 07/05/2020 18:02

For those saying metro tiles?? Are we talking the pattern or a particular tile?? I thought the brick pattern was pretty classic??

Not keen on the bevelled type of tile though
