Anyone ever regretted buying a piece of furniture?

Been hankering after a lovely piece of antique furniture for quite some while. Finally found a piece I liked and thought would look perfect.

I measured out the space it would take up on the floor etc and thought yes looks fine, a little bit but it's ok.

It's arrived today, and it is lovely... but it's just hit me that I've spent £1,000 on a table that looks 'odd' in the room. The wood is much darker than I thought, and it's out of proportions ... :(

Will I grow to love it?

Yes, our dining room table and chairs, they are far too big for the small room. We usually eat in our (large) kitchen so it is a waste of a room just to fill it with a table and chairs .... when we have family/friends round and extend the table you can’t get it or out without people moving out of the way.

I did point out to DH that it was far too large but he insisted on it ... would be much better to use up the room as a second sitting room and just get out a decorating table or similar for the rare occasions we have guests.

No, but the very first time I went round to my future husband's flat he had just ordered expensive living room furniture that I hated and I remember thinking "if we get together I'll have to live with that furniture " and sure enough 20 years later we still have it!

Yes, Parker Knowles set of recliners - cost £4000. DH and I could not agree on pattern, he ended up prevailing. They arrived and are old peoples chairs and DH puts his feet on the coffee table rather than using the expensive electric recliner. Then we got a dog and they are permanently covered in skanky throws anyway.

Give it time! If it's only just arrived, it's probably buyer's panic.

My armchair is due to arrive in the next 3 hours. I hope it doesn't dominate the room/soak up all the light. It's velvet teal, so fairly dark.

Apart from a sideboard that is a slightly more alarming shade of cherry than I ideally wanted

Stick it in a sunny spot if you can, it’ll fade quickly.

The last sofa I bought. The covers get bobbles, the back scatter cushions go with nothing. I've had it for 4 years and I've spent that 4 years trying to find cushions to go with it. I've ordered a new couch now but but worried I've made a mistake with that one too, and it will be an even more expensive mistake than the last one.

Oh I also had a moment of madness about 5 years ago and orded a silver crushed velvet bed. I bloody hated that thing. Nothing went with it either. I sold it and got a much cheaper bed from amazon, which looks so much better and was less than half the price. Infact I sold the old one for just £30 less than the new one cost me.

@CockCarousel did it turn up and do you like it? Sounds really nice

We buy most second hand. Often take months looking for the right thing.

DH is furniture designer and has good eye for things luckily.

Only once.
A few years ago I had some 'spoil' money which was burning a hole in my pocket. We had lived for so long with a houseful of family cast-offs that I was itching to have something new. I spent it all on a blocky, oak console table that, in the shop, I loved.
At home though it looked wrong no matter where I placed it. I gave it to my sister.
Since then I have bought many pieces of quality wooden furniture - all second hand and inexpensive - and restored them myself.

keepingbees Yes and yes! I so very nearly cancelled it as well Smile
