Mysterious heated bathroom mirror?!

Moved in to our new house 5 months ago, it's about 5 years old. I just noticed tonight that the mirror in our en-suite is heated!! It's quite warm to touch, I'm assuming it's a de-fogging system.

I have never noticed this before, now I'm wondering if it's been on the whole time and using up loads of electricity? Can't see any buttons or wiring, it sits out about an inch and the make is NK Porcelanosa. I'm so confused by it, is it sensor operated? But nobody had been in the en-suite for hours. Timer maybe?

I really have no idea and can't find much info online. Can anyone shed some light on how it works, or should I phone Porcelanosa and ask?

Every heated mirror I've had has been operated by a touch sensitive switch. Have you tried running your hand over the edges and listening to see if it clicks on / off?

I'll have a look and see, it's still on at the moment and seems to be much warmer in the centre of the mirror than at the edges. I wonder if it's been costing a fortune to run and been on all this time.

I was just going to mention the switch. You just run your hand underneath ours without having to touch it.
You Kow when it comes on as you can hear a click but it also has lights that come on too.

Also, I think they or at least some are only really heated in the middle. That way you can still see your face after a bath/shower Smile

All of mine have a light as well. You get the light on and the heat is on. Motion sensor.

FaithInfinity · 04/05/2020 01:10

We have something like that. You wave your hand under the right hand side and it lights up and defogs.

It's still a mystery. It doesn't have any lights in it, I haven't had the bathroom light on at all, the heating has not been on, the extractor has not been on, I can't find any switches or sensors on it. It's still very warm in the middle, I've attached some pictures to show what it looks like from the front and both sides. It's also pretty flush with the shelf below so I can't see what's underneath.

There's a motion sensor in one of the corners. Wave your hand around all the corners and see if it goes off. I've attached a pic from a manual for the brand.

Thank you for attaching that, I've just tried waving my hands around each corner so will see if it's done anything. I couldn't hear any clicks etc but will keep trying

Just a thought - does the mirror come on with the light, i.e. are the two wired to the same switch.

fee1234 · 04/05/2020 08:25

Nope it doesn't come on with the light, and I've purposely not turned the light on since I discovered it to rule that out

Has it perhaps been fitted upside down so the sensor is somewhere on the top edge or a top corner?

ItsLateHumpty · 04/05/2020 09:37

Can you ask the vendor or agent?

fee1234 · 04/05/2020 09:42

It's still warm, I've been waving all over and nothing seems to be happening. I will see if Porcelanosa have a contact I could speak to. We pulled it slightly out from the wall and can see it does have wiring, but still clueless about how it is actually operated.

Update, I phoned the manufacturer and there should be a small silver sensor either on the side or underneath. I can't see it anywhere so I'm assuming the previous owners have put the shelf right up against the sensor! He said it's not ideal for it to be running 24/7.

Will update once we remove the shelf.

We changed ours so it only comes on with the light and extractor

fee1234 · 05/05/2020 16:08

So we took it off the wall to investigate, it is connected to the mains electric, and has been on constantly - it's 25watts. Phoned the manufacturer who said there should be a sensor either at the side or underneath, but there is nothing visible.

Looks like it hasn't been fitted properly as the wires are wrapped in masking tape rather than electrical. With no success in turning it off we may just have to disconnect it and replace it, it's probably going to cost around £25 a year otherwise!

I could always hang things over it to dry!

It should be a straightforward job to connect it to the Bathroom lights
