Broken doorbell

So I've been doing my wipe down of the house every night, like a good citizen. One of the last things I do is the front door nobs, key hole etc.

As part of this I've directly sprayed the electric doorbell. Funnily enough, it's now not working. 😬 Does anyone know if it's likely to "dry out" and start working again? Or is it going to need further intervention?

Thanks!

You shouldn't have used a chemical cleaner, especially sprayed. It has probably tarnished or corroded the parts inside. Often, if you get corrosive liquids inside a low-voltage electrical or electronic part, such as a computer keyboard, you should quickly wash them in clean water with a drop of WUL, then rinse off and allow to dry. Clean water, especially if soft, leaves no harmful residue. Obviously you should not do this with any mains-powered items.

Post a photo of your bellpush please.

It was done with good intentions. But I was a bit slow to realise the (obvious) potential downside

Take the cover off and give it a better clean WITHOUT the cleaner. It's very simple button that presses on to a metal plate and they naturally corrode over time anyway.

Thank you!

disconnect the supply. If it comes from a mains transformer it is probably safe, but best to be sure. If it has a battery it is safe.

Clean away the chemicals with plenty of warm water, a small soft paintbrush with a drop of WUL, then rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before replacing the cover. If you have any WD40, moisten your DH's toothbrush with it while he's out, and rub any accessible parts once the water has dried. I have an idea you will see the metal contacts, a springy strip of bright metal that contacts another piece when you press the button. It's the point of contact that needs to be especially clean and bright.

If it is permanently damaged, a new bellpush is cheap and easy.

Thanks @PigletJohn!

Unfortunately, Dh is shielding and isn't allowed out so I can't follow to the letter! Grin
