White paint looking patchy?

Currently painting my living room white, using a dulux matt white paint and I’m painting over dulux magnolia which is very light beige.

I’ve done 3 coats of the whole room and parts still look patchy in certain lights? Hubby says I need a 4th/5th coat and that when I’ve done the right amount it won’t look patchy (he can’t help as he’s a key worker! Before anyone wonders why he isn’t participating)

However my brother said it’s me using too much paint, need to change roller head and so on.

Wondering has anyone else had this issue and how to fix it? Really starting to p*ss me off now! Can’t see it face on but if you stand against the wall and look the window shines natural daylight through and shows the patches!

It sounds as though you may not be using enough paint/trying to make it go too far Very pale and very dark colours can be tricky to get on evenly. I would go over the patches with a small roller. I normally do two full coats then go back - in really good light - and go over any bits which are patchy.

Is your roller very thin pile or foam? Get a fluffier one if you can - half inch deep or so. A good roller should give you a slightly more textured surface which will hide any imperfections and patchiness better too.

If it's already fluffy, as wowfudge says you're probably going too far - your brother is probably getting it exactly backwards. One fluffy rollerload will do a square yard or so of Dulux emulsion. Square metre at a push :) Don't try and do an entire strip of wall with one load.

Are you painting in daylight? Painting when it's dark outside gives patchy results.
