Moving to Mossley Manchester?

RJ22 · 01/05/2020 20:24

Hi,

When things get better (hopefully), we are thinking in leaving London and move to Manchester.

We are looking to move to countryside but still within reach of a big city, so when I was searching Manchester area, Mossley seems to tick all the boxes.

Does anyone lives there or has any piece of advice? Is it a nice area to live? Is it quiet and with low crime?

Any advice on any particular road or area?

We are looking for a 2 bedroom house, with garden and ideally with a cottage feeling.

Thank you very much :)

I live near there. It's a nice place. There's Top and Bottom Mossley to choose from.
It's not the 'poshest' part but the prices reflect that.

I live local to Mossley and I always wanted to live there. Mossley Hollins secondary school is 👌. I did my teacher training there and the headteacher, Mr Duncan is very charismatic and a great HT.

We were househunting all last year and tbh, I think Greenfield is nicer. It's the next village on from Mossley and has an outstanding primary school. It's more scenic and villagey than Mossley and if you're strategic in choosing the roads, then you'd hit the catchment for Greenfield primary which is Ofsted outstanding and catchment got Mossley Hollins which is outstanding too.

Chew Valley Road would hit both catchments, which is why bidding wars often happen.

I was in a bidding war for this house but was pipped to the post. Was on for 175k and ended up at 220k.

If you only want Mossley, then it's unofficially split into two areas - top Mossley and bottom Mossley. As it's very hilly, you don't tend to get big gardens as in period properties - tend to be yards or small gardens/communal gardens unless you're at upper end of price bracket. Prices are generally higher in top Mossley as it has better views and is more scenic. Parking can be tighter in top Mossley too and when it snows, people tend to leave their cars at the top of the hills as it's common to get snowed in on the steeper roads. Also useful to know if commuting that the train station is in bottom Mossley. There's no petrol station in Mossley either, so nearest petrol stations are in Stalybridge, Ashton or Oldham.

Greenfield has a train station and trains from Mossley and Greenfield stations will get you into Manchester or Huddersfield in about 15 mins.

Let me know if you want any more info. 👌

Hi there. I hope it's ok to join this chat. I'm thinking of Mossley as a possible to move to too, before my child starts school. MissLemon18 - do you know much about the area around Egmont Street? I live in the not-so-nice part of a suburb at the moment and if we move, would prefer it to be to the nicer part of somewhere! Cheers.

missym0o · 02/05/2020 09:56

I meant to add - I've heard it's a bit arty, has quite a bit cultural stuff going on, which would be a plus for me. Is that right?

geordiepidge · 02/05/2020 10:17

I live in (Top) Mossley and moved from Greenfield as we got more house for the money. Almost everywhere you go is either up or downhill but the payoff with views is awesome. For a small town the facilities, range of shops etc are amazing and we're 20 min from Manchester on the train.
Compared to Greenfield/Uppermill, Mossley is a fair bit scruffier around the edges but artier and I've personally found it friendlier with more community spirit. What crime there is tends to be petty.
Hope that helps.

Which bits are considered top and bottom Mossley? Does it have much in the way of decent places to eat and drink? The views sound fab and I love hills but are there many decent walks from there, or do you have to drive a bit to get into real countryside? Sorry if that's a lot of questions Smile

MissLemon18 · 02/05/2020 14:18

I don't know if there is a definite local way of identifying top and bottom, but my Nan who lived there in the 1970s classed anything below the old RBS building (now gone) as bottom Mossley.

We almost moved to Mossley last year. It is lovely. Various school issues are what prevented us- we would have missed the application dates for secondary so wouldn't have got into the popular Mossley Hollins for ds2, ds1 is in an AP and we were very unsure about where he would have ended up etc- but I would live there in a heartbeat. A good friend of mine does and loves it there.

needsleepz · 02/05/2020 14:26

Know the area a little - public transport isn't great - the train to Manchester is infrequent and crowded at rush hour and if you need to use it you will find it a big change from London.

MissLemon18 · 02/05/2020 14:27

Forgot to say, there's a old mill in bottom Mossley called Longlands Mill that has vintage furniture but like PP said, Mossley is more affordable than say Greenfield or Uppermill but I think it's because there's less there in the way of indie shops, coffee shops and the arty feel you seem to be looking for.

If that's what you're after, Uppermill and Greenfield have that in spades but you pay more for houses there.

RJ22 · 02/05/2020 15:24

Thank you so much for all your comments and feedback. Seems indeed that we are going to choose Mossley to buy our first home, when things get better.
Can I just ask how does the internet work there? As my husband will be working from home, we would need a reliable broadband.
Thanks :)

@RJ22 Internet can be patchy, like anywhere but once you start looking seriously and have some contenders, you can put postcodes into BT or Virgin's websites to check coverage and speed info - that could even help your decision making process.

geordiepidge · 02/05/2020 19:44

There's no Virgin cable but we have decent fibre. OP you might want to join the local Facebook groups (The Real Mossley and Saddleworth Community Forum) to get a feel for the area.

TokenGinger · 02/05/2020 19:48

Mossley is lovely. I much prefer Greenfield but I wouldn't pay Greenfield house prices. There are lovely schools in Greenfield though, so I think the suggestion of close of Chew Valley Road if you do go for Mossley is a good idea.

RJ22 · 02/05/2020 21:30

@geordiepidge Thank you for letting me know. I will look for those groups :)

@TokenGinger thank you very much for your suggestions :)
