Wall hung toilets, what do you think?

I like the look of them but have always thought, you know, one extra large person sits on it and ... timber?!

So anyone got one and what are they like. Pros & cons please. :)

All our toilets are wall hung... far neater, easier to clean toilet and floor, makes room look bigger, take weight of over 250kg so would have to be a very big person.
Only con is they are slightly more expensive and fiddly if the flush needs replacing

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 01/05/2020 15:46

We got one in our previous house in our loft bathroom for all the reasons a previous poster mentioned.
One piece of advice. Have someone install it who actually knows what they are doing. Our loft company split the work between a carpenter to
build the box and the plumber to plumb the toilet in. The box ended up being a random size, whilst it should have been flush with the cistern. We only noticed after the toilet was installed and the box tiled. As soon as we sat down on the toilet the tiles broke. So they had to break the tiles, re-open the box and fit some wooden blocks to make it flush. A few years later the grouting broke, so still not perfect.
So yeah, get someone decent to fit.

I always feel like they will fall off the wall... but have ordered a Grohe one and we shall see!

thejollygargler · 01/05/2020 16:03

Just me that read it as "well-hung" toilets then Blush

MiddlewoodWay · 01/05/2020 16:07

All of ours are wall hung, I prefer them as it makes the floor easier to clean.

sbplanet · 01/05/2020 16:07

Yes, just you @thejollygargler! :p :D

Hope to get a decent plumber in PuffTMD. :)

I have one and it’s easier to clean

ArkAtEee · 02/05/2020 17:39

Neat and easy to clean, but the bolts have slightly loosened over the years. DP has had to buy a new spanner set small enough to fit down the top to tighten them up, it's very fiddly.

bouncydog · 02/05/2020 18:41

All of ours are wall hung. Much neater and easier to clean as no soil pipes and flush tanks as all are behind the tiles. Tiles also go right underneath so no ugly cuts to see.

NeedToKnow101 · 02/05/2020 18:43

I thought you said 'well-hung' toilets too!! 🍆🍒🚽🤢

ANoiseAnnoys · 02/05/2020 18:46

We have several bathrooms (I’m not stealth boasting honest!) and my favourite is the one with the wall hung loo. It’s soooo much easier to clean. The others are all traditional style and I’m annoyed we didn’t use all wall hung loos. Also eldest ds is erm.....a big lad and no problems with weight - we’ve had it a good few years now.

Selmaselma · 02/05/2020 18:55

We have two of these since a few years without any problems. They look great and are easy to clean. I second the poster who said that it is important to have it installed by someone experienced.

TeddyBeans · 02/05/2020 19:11

I've only ever seen them in hotels or restaurants and they do make me nervous 😅 they just don't look sturdy enough but I've never had one collapse under my arse yet!

johnd2 · 02/05/2020 23:35

We have one although it wasn't fitted by sometime experienced i did it myself and my wife tiled. But no need to worry about it falling, as it comes with a metal frame that goes half way up the wall to stabilise it.
It was expensive as we got grohe/duravit but it's a high quality one and it look good. Also handy if you are tall or short and want the height different.

johnd2 · 02/05/2020 23:38

Pressed send too soon, we did it higher than standard but forgot to take into account it should only be taller based on how much longer your lower leg is, so if you're 10cm taller then average it only needs to be 2cm higher.
Oh and we also couldn't quite believe the weight limit but me and my wife both decided to sit on it at the same time and nothing moved although given the limit is 250kg we are only half that together!

We have them in several bathrooms and I think they are great. Stylish and easy to clean. Tiling around and behind them is neat so we are more than happy. Oldest one is 30 years in situ and is still perfect. Go for it.

TiddleTaddleTat · 03/05/2020 00:15

I always wonder about access to pipes or the cistern if needed... having to rip off all those tiles. Although would be much easier to clean underneath and look very streamlined.

BubblesBuddy · 03/05/2020 00:54

Have you needed to access a cistern or pipes? We never have.

johnd2 · 03/05/2020 10:51

Access inside the cistern (on ours) is through the panel where the flush button is, not perfect access but plenty enough.
Access to the pipes, the fresh water you can reach down from above if necessary and the waste goes under the floor or you could unhang the toilet to get inside the pipe if that were somehow necessary.
The is also a side panel to access the pipes from above, basically a vertical strip of tiles that is just hooked on and siliconed instead of grouted in the same ivory colour.
I think all that is better access than most, but i don't expect it to be necessary.

sbplanet · 03/05/2020 12:56

Thanks everyone, but esp. @johnd2 for the access info. Although I could have done without having the visual image of you and your missus on the loo together!!! Grin

I used a wall hung toilet in the first bathroom we replaced, as a previous poster mentioned they make for VERY easy cleaning.
A few things to note:-
The actual toilets come in approximately 3 projection sizes, short, medium and extra long. Short for small en-suite and cloakrooms and strangely I also used a longer projection for a large bathroom where the loo was set back in a narrow area, using the larger sized meant it projected forward into a more spacious area. The medium is a standard projection size 540mm.
The metal frames also come in different heights, standard height, tall frames which are 114cm and have a slimline 8cm cistern ( plus aqua board or ply plus tiles and short frames to go under windows, meaning the cistern is wider and takes up more room. To save room the flush button might be on the top set in the ledge careful,if you set it at the front it may mean when the toilet lid is up it covers or partially covers the flush button -measure carefully and choose appropriately so it's sits in the wall just above the where the lid ends when open.
Someone also mentioned the height of the loo can be adjusted upon installation, I tried the first one sat on an empty adhesive bucket, it was perfect, the second one was downstairs where children use it, I set it a bit lower. I had a bad back when I set the third one so that's a bit high!
Can you tell I love wall hung toilets.
Flush plates are specific to the frame model. They range from £40 - £500+. I like the glass ones, smoked glass made neutral and will match your mirrors, white and aqua glass are lovely too.

They are hung on a very solid metal frame, they’re not just bolted on a wall.
