If working from home becomes the norm; top 3 house requirements?

The UK has a large service industry and I am hearing that many companies are considering going to majority work from home days during the week. Employees may only need to be in the office once or twice a week, if at all.

My question is, if that is going to be a trend for the next few years, and you are looking to move, what will be the top 3 requirements of your next property? I'll start with mine:

  • large enough to have a private home office space
  • in an area with culture/buzz, given there will be no 'social contact' that you normally get at work.
  • garden

We’re in Australia so the houses are generally bigger which is a godsend when you need to get a bit of space from each other. Husband and I both work from home most of the time anyway. Here in Oz we can both claim a percentage of electricity/internet against tax (20% each I think) because of this. Might be worth checking out in the UK?

For those needing office space as well as a spare room, I can definitely recommend the Studybed company. We put one of their small doubles in our front small bedroom (typical box room in a 30s semi) 6 years ago. DH works from home full time so it is an office first but we just move the desk chair out to another room when we need it as a bedroom.

My sister luckily had one of their single bed ones installed last year as she is now WFH. They are not cheap but they are excellent quality.

DH and I also have oil filled radiators so that when we work from home we only heat the room we are working in rather than the whole house.
