Gas & electricity bill £370pm

foodiefil · 29/04/2020 20:05

Hi - not sure if this is the right place for this but I wondered what people thought of the above.

Some facts:

  • supplier Bulb
  • property type: 3 bed Edwardian terrace - the kind that is long. Two reception rooms - large kitchen. Utility.
  • mostly single glazing
  • use does include underfloor heating in the kitchen
  • occasional use of electric heater (fake log burner thing)
  • gas fire
  • gas oven
  • average use of lights, TV, charger etc but nothing major by two adults
  • this is from a meter reading
  • it's been this much for 2 years

Are we leaking gas from somewhere or does the above tell somebody smarter than me where we're going wrong?

Or does that sound right?

Please help 😢

That doesn't sound right to me OP - we're a reasonably generously sized 3 bed Victorian terrace, in SE and pay £78 per month. Our energy use sounds similar to yours, apart from the underfloor heating which we don't have. Having said that our boiler is really old so probs v inefficient and expensive, and I'm embarrassed to admit we don't have loft insulation ( on the to do list) . I'm quite a cold person, so we don't scrimp on the heating either. DH compares costs between providers annually, and changes if we can get it cheaper, might that be worth looking into?
We also have one of those meter things that displays what you're using in real time, if your provider offers that it might help your investigations regarding what's costing you so much.

Meadows20 · 29/04/2020 21:20

To add, if you contact your supplier they can go through a consumption breakdown with you, they will go through how you heat your home, energy efficiency I.e. what windows do you have? Insulation? Cavity wall? Etc, what appliances you have, how many people are in the house and so on. It may take a while but might pinpoint the problem...if it doesn't, they can send an engineer out to check your meters for any issues.

KingOfDogShite · 29/04/2020 21:22

There’s something wrong with that bill considering the size of your house.

We’ve got loops on our gas & electricity supplies which tell us exactly how much we use. We spend about £140 a month for our 3 bed detached and dot scrimp at all.

Bugger bugger bollocks bollocks bugger!!

We have electric underfloor heating and it's on all the fecking time! I'm switching it off now. It is not worth £300 for warm feet. I wear slippers it's him indoors!

Thanks so much for all of your replies. If we turn the underfloor heating off and it doesn't halve then I'm scared there's a leak.

THANK YOU

£200 - five bed Victorian and six of us and someone home all day. We use the electric floor sparingly and it’s only in bath rooms

BackforGood · 29/04/2020 21:33

That is ridiculously high.

We have 3 floors of living space, (6 bedrooms) and are in a Victorian semi, so long and thin housing like you, but bigger.
We have 2 (often 3) young adults in the house as well as dh and I, so usually have a LOT of devices on at once.

I look for the best deal every year, and EVERY YEAR I am told that our electricity usage is really high
However, we "only" pay £122pm.

Your bills are ridiculous.

Fairybatman · 29/04/2020 21:35

It’s got to be worth a try turning the underfloor heating off.

We are in a 4 bed semi townhouse with bulb and pay £60 per month combined.

The house is always warm and we have a toddler so at least 1 wash and dry a day.

We do have super thick loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and a really efficient boiler and heat recovery thing.

foodiefil · 29/04/2020 21:37

I can't believe how stupid we've been.

Electricity was £2k something last year and gas £700

Going to keep an eye on things

Take meter readings now and then weekly, and pop it into your Bulb app (if you have it) every time you do - that should tell you fairly quickly if it's working! Also think about getting smart meters if you can (presuming you're not renting). If after two-three weeks you aren't seeing a dramatic drop, then ring Bulb to check your meters (they can run fast if there's a fault although rare) and a gas engineer to check everything is working as it should.

mencken · 30/04/2020 20:17

it is worth answering the question asked upthread:

  • cost per unit
-standing charge cost

Bulb can be very expensive as no fixes.

Elsiebear90 · 30/04/2020 20:51

Wow that’s insane, would be worth getting central heating just for the cost savings alone. We pay £56 a month with bulb for a three bed 1930s semi and that’s with a 10 year old boiler and us having the heating on a thermostat at 20c all day (14c at night) to stop condensation damp.

userxx · 30/04/2020 20:57

That's more than my mortgage 😬. Definitely turn off the underfloor heating and see what that does to your bills, hopefully it will come right down........ invest in some fluffy slippers too.

Bella444 · 30/04/2020 21:05

We have a really similar house but no underfloor heating. Log burner in one room. Two people. £75pm gas and electric.

PigletJohn · 30/04/2020 22:29

@tryinganotherusername

No loft insulation?

Good grief, it's time you moved forward into the 1960's.

TheClitterati · 30/04/2020 22:42

I'm with Bulb and pay £65pcm (reduced from £82 as I accumulated a big overpay).

3 story, 3 bed house. 3 people. Double glazing, gas boiler. I wfh so I'm always here.

I know underfloor heating can be expensive but your Bill seems seriously high.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 30/04/2020 23:48

I could have written the OP myself! We only talked about how ridiculously expensive our electricity bill is this evening! I need to read though all your comments and take a proper look at our consumption...

flameprincess · 01/05/2020 01:07

How have you been paying that astronomical amount for 2 years and only now thought to turn off the underfloor heating? That bill would cripple me! Hope you see a huge difference soon OP.

MarieG10 · 01/05/2020 08:15

It is most likely the UFH. Most people who get it use until they get the first bill and switch it off.

We are 4 bed detached with large extensions etc which has gas UFH so cheaper the normal central heating but for a full year we pay £2000 for both gas and electric and that's with it in a good part of the day as well.

Do be careful about changing suppliers though as it can save a lot of money

Ilovefluffysheep · 01/05/2020 12:34

Wow, I hope turning off your underfloor heating helps, that bill is crazy!

We're with Bulb - 4 bedroom detached house currently with 5 adults (3 of whom are constantly gaming, don't turn off lights etc despite constant nagging) and a hot tub, and last month was our most expensive yet at £220, and I thought that was huge!

areallthenamesusedup · 01/05/2020 12:44

UF heating varies depending what type you have so that may not be the issue.
Good luck. Hope you get it all sorted.
Don't beat yourself up, at least you have noticed it and are sorting it now.

earsup · 02/05/2020 00:27

Bulb is no longer cheap..even British gas have better fixed deals than them now so switch also...we now with octopus but Yorkshire energy is cheaper so switching to them soon.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/05/2020 07:21

The single pane windows will offer no insulation at all from the cold, they leak the heat out.

foodiefil · 26/05/2020 15:28

Had our first bill since turning the underfloor heating off in the kitchen ...

£71.99
