How to get this effect on my ceiling?

Using the time in lockdown to get a few things done around the house. Last night when DC was asleep, my DH and I were putting things in the attic.

I was in the attic moving bits and bobs around when boom, I stepped on a bit which was not boarded and my foot went through to the ceiling below - our bedroom.

We will need to repair the hole (something we have done before) and redo the patch on the ceiling. It has some kind of textured/stipple effect (photo attached) which we did try to do before on our previous repair (different room) but we stippled with a sponge, and it is not quite the same.

Can anyone help with what effect is on our ceiling and how to achieve this effect?

Thanks

You need one of these - www.amazon.co.uk/Artex-Stipple-Brush-Stippler-Stippling/dp/B00LNCFNUQ?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Push in, pull out, to leave the little 'bobbles'.

It's s different paint as well, I think. Artex, holds the textures

Thanks, I have scoured diy sites and found the supplies I need to recreate this.

As an aside can anyone tell me is there an official name for this effect? I've spotted online names like "popcorn" or "stomp" ceiling, but they do not match quite right.

Isn't it just stipple? The size of the stipple will be affected by how deep the artex is, and what brush/sponge you use. And presumably by how you do it- it may not be possible to match exactly. Can you practice on cardboard first, see how close you can get?

Good idea, will find some cardboard to practice on first.

If it is Artex, be careful - depending on the age, it can contain asbestos.
