We have an Edwardian terrace and after this is over are looking to get Victorian/Edwardian style tiling! Just not sure exactly what colours to go for and where to source them.. and also not sure how much to expect all this to be! I’d like a border! The hallway is about the size of first picture, and has a curve around like the 3rd picture which I’m assuming will make it harder to tile! We e painted below dado rail blue and above white like the 2nd picture!
Also any photos for inspiration will be great!!
Thank you!!

Also, trying to be as cost effective as possible with everything, so trying to find a balance between looking good and not breaking bank, we will however have to get a professional in to tile as neither of us has the skills.

We are about to do ours. I like the Mr Jones charcoal tiles on the link above. Currently waiting on a quote for original style Salisbury black on dover white tiles.

Although I like the Victorian tiles we have a very dark hallway and so need to go fairly light.

nordstrom · 27/04/2020 08:45

Check our 'Original Style' tiles. Lovely patterns but not as expensive as some encaustic tiles.

Pinterest has great ideas, search Victorian Hallway, lots have borders and they're beautiful

nordstrom · 27/04/2020 09:05

Meant out not our!

Loofah01 · 27/04/2020 09:15

There's a load of places that stock similar tiles so spend some time trawling the tinterweb. Best just to keep doing what you're doing - try to narrow the choice down and then get some quotes for fitting, unless you want to try it yourself?

Christmascookiesmmmm · 27/04/2020 13:28

Thanks so so much for all these ideas and links!! I love the Victorian tiles on the toppstiles website but don’t understand why they’re like 10 x the price of the mr jones tiles.. is it because they are made up of smaller tiles to make the pattern? I was budgeting for £2000 all in including fitting , so think I’ll have to maybe try and find similar style for lower price!

Also really like the ‘original style ‘ tiles too! Just no idea about pricing there but I may ring up :D thanks all!

We had ours done last year.

Proper reproduction Victorian tiles seem to cost an arm and a leg I’m afraid. The best are made by Winckels (sp?) and are exactly like the Victorian ones. Original Style aren’t bad but imo not quite the same as the old ones. They all cost £££, way more than other sorts of tile, I don’t know why.

Cheapest I found was the 5mm thick Winckels tiles supplied in the UK by Martin Mosaic. He sells through ebay and also his own website. He will provide the tiles on pre set out sheets with a diagram for your tiler to follow.

However these cheaper 5mm tiles only come in one size 50x50mm, and no patterned tiles like the central tiles in your first pic, so that limits the designs you can have. But the designs in your second two pics should be do able. (If you want more of a range of shapes and decorated tiles then you need the 9mm range and they cost a lot more.)

So your first decision is, do you want proper Victorian reproduction and accept the cost? Doubt you’ll get it for £2k incl fitting, even with the 5mm tiles, though depends what your local tilers charge and how big/complex a design you want.

Or do you go for some other kind of cheaper geometric tiles and say it’s a “nod to” Victorian style. The Topps Tiles ones linked to above for example. Or hexagonal tiles could look good.

minipie · 27/04/2020 13:49

Sorry, to clarify, the 5mm Winckels were the cheapest I found that really look like the original Victorian tiles. There are definitely cheaper if you are after a Victorian look but not too worried about it looking completely authentic.

Christmascookiesmmmm · 27/04/2020 14:30

Thank you so much for your response @minipie! Going to look that up- could I please ask how much yours did come out as and how many m2 you had to tile? Also if you had a photo you were happy to share that would be amazing!! I think this is the kind of style I’d like- our hallway is very dark too so think the designs with white in will work!
we’ll probably be moving in next 5/10 years so I don’t want to spend an absolute fortune! But then again I’m assuming it’ll add the same value especially if it looks authentic as I assume that’s desirable?

Actually don’t like 3rd one as much 😆 think I’m pretty set of design of first 2 though, and I’m assuming that’s going to be hard to find in the cheaper tiles :(

Ooo just found his shop and love the winkels tiles , they’re exactly what I’m after! Thanks again! I’m in north east so miiiight have luck fitters charging lower rates fingers crossed.. or my partner’s father does do tiling if we’re desperate but he’s done so much for my partner’s sister and is fed up I think so don’t want to put him out! Anyone know how many days jobs it would be?

Oh sorry- another question! They are all unglazed on Martin mosaic - do you then have to glaze them to protect them? We have dog and a fair amount of foot traffic!

www.bertandmay.com have lovely tiles

AdventureAhead · 27/04/2020 16:16

Are you set on tiles? We recently did the hallway in our Edwardian terrace. I loved the same sort of look you are going to but I was worried about tiles being noisy, cold and pretty expensive. We found some vinyl flooring that had the same sort of pattern and I have to say it's passed all my expectations. It was so cheap compared to tiles (both retail price and fitting), it's warm, cleans really easily and not noisy. Had lots of comments about how good it looks.

geojojo · 27/04/2020 16:22

adventureahead could you post a photo or link to what you had? Also considering tiling our Edwardian project house but trying to keep costs low as have so much to do!

minipie · 27/04/2020 16:45

Hi OP, I’ve checked and we paid £2500 for the tiles (from Martin Mosaic) and about £2000 for the fitting (a local tiler but one with lots of Victorian tile experience). It was a reasonably complicated pattern using the 5mm Winckels and we have a large hallway (8.5 sq m) with an odd shape so lots of tricky borders. Plus we are in London. You’d pay less on both counts I’m sure for a smaller, straighter hall and outside London.

That tile cost included Martin setting out all the tiles into pre laid sheets which certainly makes the tilers job easier and less likely to go wrong. You can pay less if you order loose tiles but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have a real expert laying them. The fitting cost included laying a dura mat under which is a membrane that helps guard against movement and moisture issues.

They do need sealing but that’s a fairly simple job and they are pretty bombproof once laid and sealed.

minipie · 27/04/2020 16:54

As to designs, of the last lot of pics you posted I’d say the design in the pic with the wooden banister could definitely be done with 50mm tiles, indeed it looks like it is. The 50mm tiles can be cut down to triangles and smaller squares or rectangles so it’s not as limiting as you might think.

The design in the pic with the stained glass door looks like it may be done using other sizes. You could probably do something similar with 50mm but for example, those bigger grey squares would be made up of 4 smaller squares so could look a bit choppy.

Ours is the Eastlake design www.londonmosaic.com/catalogue-victorian-and-modern-tile-design.htm#!eastlake_50dia_3L but in black and white. London Mosaic and Martin Mosaic websites are good places to look for designs. Martin can tell you which designs will work in 50mm tiles and he can also adjust any designs eg swap to a different border or different colours and send you a mock up of what it would look like.

minipie · 27/04/2020 17:07

Actually this section in Martin Mosaic site shows a whole load of designs done with 50x50mm tiles - at least. 3 pages of designs and remember he can change borders/colours. We are MN20.

AdventureAhead · 28/04/2020 14:56

@geojojo photo attached. Lots of different patterns available (both in vinyl tiles - LVT and sheet vinyl). This is sheet vinyl.

Please help me with choosing tiles for hallway!
geojojo · 28/04/2020 15:08

adventureahead that looks so nice. Did you fit them yourself or get a professional?

AdventureAhead · 28/04/2020 15:32

@geojojo we boarded the floor ourselves (uneven, happy floorboards so needed overboarding with ply to give a flat surface). We then got a professional to cut and glue the vinyl. He was a local carpet fitter who also does vinyl. Approx £50 to fit which was far far cheaper than cost to get tiles fitted!
