Removing paint from 1920s front door - how?

I'm in the process of painting the original wooden front door of our house.
The actual door is fine but the frame has multiple layers of paint, some is peeling off revealing bare wood, bits of the wood are rotten - I'm not sure how to proceed?! I've given it a quick sand to get the flakiest bits off.
I've got a heat gun, paint stripper & a sander - which should I use?
TIA

I would use them all, in that order! When using paint stripper, I've found wire wool the best thing to use to remove it/the paint afterwards - especially round the details.

Be careful! The paint is very likely to have lead in it.

Heat gun and sanding are very bad for lead paint, you don't want to breathe in the fumes or dust.

I would strip it.

I've gone with the paint stripper first as I'm not sure if there's lead in the paint. Just waiting for it to do it's magic. If that fails I'll try the other two.
Thanks for the advice.

Always used a blow torch and scraper myself... Bubbles up and then you scrape it. Fumes from doing one door aren't going to kill you

Hmm well 2 thick coats of paint stripper doesn't seem to be doing much so I think I'll try round 2 tomorrow with the heat gun & scraper

If you do that please wear a mask... there is no "safe" minimum level for lead inhalation.

I found with paint stripper that I had to put about three times as much on and leave it three times longer than it recommended.

Then use a scraper and scrape it off. Where the paint was flaked, I could use the scraper to just scrape it, pulling more paint off too.

Then sanding. And sanding. And polyfillering and sanding. Then wipe it with a damp cloth.

And before you put the base layer on, wipe it down with with a very lightly damp cloth again.

Remove all old door furniture like handles, numbers, letter box.

Heat gun, sharp scraper, goggles, mask.

You'll be done in no time.

The fill, sand, fill, sand, clean.

Undercoat, light sand, clean. Twice.

Top coat, light sand, clean. Twice.

Clean up door furniture with metal cleaner and wire wool and screw them back on.

And you're done!

Thanks all. I'm going to give it a go with a heat gun (& mask!) tomorrow.
This is turning into a much bigger job than I'd planned. Still at least it will keep me busy during lockdown
Will post a pic once it's all done.
