I was due to start the process of getting an extension on my home before Co-vid & lockdown hit.
I've been thinking about it for a year, and have chosen an architect and seen a couple of builders to get a rough idea of costs.
I've had a delay due to the re-mortgage being held up by Co-vid and I had to cancel the land/building survey & architect visit which was booked in a couple of weeks ago.
I own my home alone, and am really stretching myself to pay for it, by extending my mortgage to retirement age, but I doubt I will ever move from this house, which isn't very big, and is now probably my 'forever' home. I love the area and it could become a lovely house with the extension & garden being re-designed. I have lived in my house 10 years, so I know I am happy here!
I will be adding a Wc & utility & larger sitting room - so a very practical extension, but I might not realise the cost of it if I have to sell.
My current work is fairly pandemic proof - it should be recession/depression proof too, but you never know for sure. I'm still working and earning the same through lock-down.
I have a fairly ok loan to equity value (50:50).
In my circumstances would you go for it when the lock-down is lifted?
Most of the building work can be done without knocking through and I guess building work itself won't start for at least 6-9months depending on planning permission delays.
One of the reasons I would like the extension is because I would like to adopt (I was not able to have child) as a solo adopter, and would like a bigger home for play dates and all the 'stuff' children have/need (I too have a lot of stuff
) so I have that in the mix too.
