Kitchen extension with plans

We were going to swap round the dining and kitchen areas. So the dining/sitting area is by the sliding doors and looks on to garden and kitchen will be the darker room, no natural light apart from roof lantern.

I can’t quite imagine how the kitchen will look.

I think that sounds lovely. You can sit at the dining table with a paper and a cuppa - bliss.

I think the idea is lovely but can't see how the kitchen will fit into the darker end with all the doors. It won't be a nice L shaped kitchen and I prefer those to galley style or straight lines kitchens. Also do you enter your kitchen through the study every time?

There’s a load of doors at the moment which is just weird.

We use the snug as storage at moment for overflow from the kitchen. The plan is to put some built in cupboard space in there, pantry etc.
So you’d walk through that to the kitchen. Then kitchen where the dining table and chairs are on the plan.

Washing machine, sink and dryer in the utility.

We thought of doing an L shape But there’s a huge structural wall where the door is between utility and kitchen. Much cheaper to leave that in place and extend out.

How big will the opening from snug to kitchen be? Can you not put main part of kitchen in the snug. Leave dining table where it is then have seating/study area at the light end looking over the garden. You'll enjoy the views more that way.

If you're going to use the snug as a storage/pantry area then I think it will work well putting the kitchen next to it. If you kept it as a snug I think it wouldn't, as there'd potentially be food smells/noise/clutter always nearby.

As you've got the island I think a straight line kitchen will be fine, although losing some of the storage of the L-shaped. Put good lighting above the island (maybe pendant lights if you want to make a feature of it?) to tackle any darkness.

I don’t think you’d fit in nearly as much kitchen if you switch ends. Also, you’ll be cooking in the gloom with no view.

Personally, I’d rather be cooking with a view and dining without.

I’d actually take your plans to some kitchen showrooms (or whatever we do for that these days) and ask them to design you a kitchen both ways. That’ll give you a better idea.

Maybe that’s the question....cook with a view or eat with a view. I’d rather have the latter I think.

I’m not sure there’ll be enough room for an island if we switch it round.
