Window Film

Has anyone used a film for privacy on the windows?

We are overlooked from every angle, we live in a horse shoe shape as as you come from the top you are looking directly into our house.

I have nets up which I hate. Wondering wether to invest in vertical blinds which I don't really like but not many other options.

I like the thought of the film, it's not collecting dust the way blinds do. It's more minimal which I like. Was thinking of just doing half way up the windows but don't know if it would look stupid.

Our old house had it when we moved in, I immediately removed it as its not for me BUT it worked a treat for privacy! The previous owner had put it on perfectly too and looked great (if that's your thing!)

Another option, depending on which part of the window you want to block, is reverse/ bottom up blinds www.bottomupblinds.co.uk/.

We have them instead of nets and they work really well.

HelloTerrance · 17/04/2020 12:13

Wow I have never seen a bottom up blind before! Not sure if I like it or not yet but it's another option.

@JumpingOnTheBed what was it about the film you didn't like? I will be having normal curtains as well, In our old house we just had curtains but we weren't in anyone's direct eyeline there.

Here the shops are at the top of a square, then a play park and a grass area with a path through. All the houses are in a horse shoe from the shops. Walking down the path you can see right into our house.

I had film part way up the windows when I lived in a house that was straight on to the pavement. With Venetian blinds to pull down at night. I liked it, still got light in but had privacy where I needed it.

I think you can make it look quite smart if you dont use it everywhere.

I've used it in a few houses, works really well. Have always used Brume as they have some lovely designs. Have used them in fanl lights, glass door panels and half way up a front bay window for privacy.

This is an old estate agent photo of the house I used it in 👍🏻

Café Curtains?

HelloTerrance · 17/04/2020 12:58

That's what I was thinking, sort of half way up and downstairs only?

Only problem being I won't be able to see out either and I like to be nosy.

We did and it worked brilliantly. Had Victorian bay windows and people kept staring in so we did the bottom of the sash windows and it worked very well and looked nice. We got ours on Amazon.

We have some on the front of our house, just on the bottom half of the windows. Went for one which has a pattern from Purlfrost, so isn't completely frosted. Have been really happy with them, but I do miss seeing the view sometimes.

JumpingOnTheBed · 17/04/2020 13:40

@HelloTerrance I just like open window views, the previous owner must have had privacy issues but the house wasn't overlooked that much.

I hate nets too and we have none in our house but then we're not really overlooked.

I think the half window idea would work fabulously!

I’d feel hemmed in not being able to see out the windows unless I stood up. I’d go for Venetian blinds which can be angled so you can see out but no one else can see in. Or sheer privacy blinds to get in maximum light.

Perfidy · 17/04/2020 14:30

Upstairs in last house we had roller blinds that were quite sheer, liked them too, could see out but not in, they looked smart.

HelloTerrance · 17/04/2020 15:35

The thing with the blinds, they just collect dust and its an extra thing to clean. I suppose I could go upstairs if I am desperate to be nosy put of the window. It's quite a nice view which is what is making me hesitate.

You can get one way mirror film - you can see out but people outside can't see in.

HelloTerrance · 17/04/2020 17:23

I liked the look of that but at night time it works the opposite way.

But the bullet now and ordered it. Just doing downstairs and and halfway up. If I want to look out I will have to stand up. Can always take it off if I hate it I suppose. Will post a picture when it's done.

Interesting about the mirror film - if you have curtains though, that's not really an issue.

mumwon · 17/04/2020 17:50

look on you tube for advice on how to do it (they always have people diy random things!) One thing is to do it slowly & carefully. I did have safety film on old windows & boy was I glad I did when one of the dc I looked after fell heavily into the front door glass - the glass shattered but stuck firmly to the sheet in one piece dc was fine (dc was v chunky bumble bee type Grin) & it was easy to clear up. & from my experience with that take your time

HelloTerrance · 17/04/2020 18:03

It gets dark early on in winter though and wouldn't want the curtains drawn all the time.

I will be exhausting YouTube between now and delivery and taking my time with it.
