Would you do this if you had the space/money?

We're thinking of doing something similar in our bedroom (mezzanine not the decor). Has anyone tried anything like this? Upsides/downsides?

Instead of a wall at the top, we would be hoping to have a balcony installed.

Thoughts?

Would you do this if you had the space/money?

It’s not for me - I don’t think I’d use it and not sure I like the overall look of it either. If you do think you’d use the space then I can see the appeal though.

We have it more as a sitting room area with a log burner plus lots and lots of bookshelves. We were planning on doing a separate conversion but we both like the idea of this.

Would it impact the existing room as much as the photo you've attached?

If you ever came to sell people would look at that and see a room darkened under the overhang and an ugly staircase that takes up floorspace.

I’m not sure about that. It’s not as usable as creating a completely separate room. Bedrooms don’t work very well as multifunction spaces, unless there’s really no room elsewhere. I don’t like the mezzanine hanging halfway over the bed either. However, I did live in a house with a mezzanine and it worked well, but it was an upside-down house with bedrooms downstairs and the living and kitchen upstairs, with a terrace. The mezzanine worked well, because it added hugely to the living space, not the bedroom space.

I think decor will play a big part in how it feels, all the grey in that picture makes it look like a gloomy cave.

We've got very high ceilings and haven't put in any mezzanines because I really enjoy the feeling of space and light. You could try suspending some sheets for a while, just to see if you'd like being boxed in. It would probably make the space easier to keep warm in the winter.

I think we’d need to see a picture with dimensions of the room your considering this for. The one in the picture looks like a pretty impractical small storage area which as PP says has stuck a big ugly staircase in the bedroom. Would you really have room for a sitting area? I’ve usually seen the mezzanine in bedroom set up in flats in London, where they really need to use the space efficiently... without knowing what your house and family set up are its hard to say!
I’d probably rather have a light, spacious double height bedroom.
