Bedsheets4knickers · 12/04/2020 19:12

Hello all . We need a new downstairs toilet and sink . In what order do we tackle this . We need to Rip everything out first .
I want wall paper on the walls and new tiles on the floor . Do we wall paper and tile the floor first then fit the new toilet and sink or do we plumb in the new toilet and sink and then wall paper and tile around it . We will be getting people in to plumb and tile but I want them to think I know what I'm talking about .Blush

Not sure why the other posters are being mean - I know what you are on about! I think plumb it in then do the decorating. As it new there will be some pipe work etc so that will wreck the wallpaper and damage the floor if you do that first. A competent tiler should be able to tile around a toilet.
Be sure to either use tile or a clear perspex sheet (you can order to size and very reasonable) above the sink so you don't get water on the paper there. Good luck!

We are having a new downstairs loo fitted now. Floor, wall tiles and painting is doneZ toilet and sink will be plumbed in next. Good luck Smile

PragmaticWench · 12/04/2020 20:38

I'm leaving the wallpaper in my new downstairs toilet until last, so it doesn't get damaged as the rest of the room is fitted. We're only doing wallpaper on the top half of the walls though, with wipe clean panelling below.

I've read an article before about tiling under a toilet versus tiling around but can't for the life of me remember which is best. I can see our bathroom toilet has the tiles going underneath but it might depend on the toilet base?

Christ I didn't expect anyone to take offence over this one .
Thanks for all the non offending replies . X

Clearly not, they over egged it.

Wtf? Ridiculous comment.

OP it is preferable to lay the floor and then affix toilet pan on top as that way you avoid having to cut tiles around it, have grout around the perimeter etc., but it’s not a major issue, you can do it either way.

I think as pp suggested it would be best to do walls last.

What's your problem Jeeperscreepers69 , donquixotedelamancha? Hmm

MN has long been a place where you can come and ask for advice.
Why do you consider it okay to sneer at someone asking for help ???

Bedsheets4knickers · 13/04/2020 06:01

Brill thank you xx

Most of my customers when I had a construction business had very little idea of what 'the job' encountered. My advice is read a few books so you at least know the terminology. Sounds to me you already know what you're talking about, so go with what you suggested. Either that or get an architect to oversee the job which will then double the price.

Bedsheets4knickers · 13/04/2020 06:19

No don't want to double the price . Lock down is proving costly for us already . I'm on the right track now . Glad I asked x

In our experience of 3 bathrooms being fitted for the two more expensive refit we've done they recommended laying the floor (vinyl in one, tiles in the other) first then screw the toilet on top to give a clean line. In our first, budget make over we had the loo fitted then got a fitter to cut the vinyl flooring and he caulked round it. You get a funny shaped cut behind the loo if you add the flooring after, but otherwise (as most people don't inspect behind toilets!) we found both looked fine.

Decorate the sink and toilet fitted

Blacksideupanddownagain · 13/04/2020 08:13

*Decorate after sink and toilet fitted

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/04/2020 08:19

I have no idea why the first couple of replies were so negative.

We have the same dilemma, our builder was scheduled to replace/redo our downstairs loo and utility room at the start of Aptil. Obviously that didn't happen.

The previous owner had tiled around the loo and basin rather than lay the floor first. It's a nightmare because the floor tiles are fine and we dont want to replace them. So we are having to choose a toilet based on the template of the previous toilet.

MichaelMumsnet · 13/04/2020 08:42

Hi all. We've got no concerns about this one - the OP has been around for yonks. We've removed a couple of posts because we don't allow trollhunting.

ZoeandChandon · 13/04/2020 08:47

Tile floor and have the loo fitted on top, will look much nicer. Try to get the loo in the middle of one tile, not on top of any grout lines, as it will inevitable get wee stained.

Muchlywrong · 13/04/2020 14:53

Only thing to be wary of when decorating is that your wallpaper is likely to start peeling in a few years due to the moisture that will get onto it. It is a better idea to just paint in my opinion. As others have said, it is always better to tile first, then lay the toilet.

jackstini · 13/04/2020 14:57

Any chance you can completely tile walls? That way no further decorating!

Agree do flooring first, although we changed our toilets to wall hung so can easily clean underneath

Bowerbird5 · 13/04/2020 15:07

Cant imagine why anyone would be rude didn't see the post but can't have been good if removed.

Agree with others wallpaper or paint last. You could afford more expensive paper as probably only use one role.I would tile halfway up the wall so it is easy to mop then a thin border tile and paper the top half.Good luck with it.Look on pinterest for ideas. I wish they had had that years ago when we were doing our house.I am going to do the outside toilet and paint something quite random because I can! I used to visit a small garden centre where they had rough cast walls painted shades of terracotta and a lion's head for a basin. My kids loved going to the toilet there as they washed their hands in water from the lion's moth Unfortunately as it got more popular they had to have two loos and the lion's head went.

Bedsheets4knickers · 13/04/2020 16:40

I don't know why they were rude either but that's their bag not mine .
We are going to tile and fit first then paper . The paper is for bathrooms and kitchens a sort of mosaic print . Then a splash back panel around the corner sink .
Thank you all .
