Garden fence.

Ndn fence is sagging because one of the posts has rotted at the base.

They won’t be fixing it, their not that sort. Relations broke down when our cat put their cat in hospital and ndn drove into dhs car damaging it.

I really need to get another cat. My last was run over on our road. I want a garden I can cat-proof because I can’t go through that again. House cats I don’t agree with, it would be like living in permanent lockdown.

Is there a stronger fence we can put in our garden?. I can’t catproof without a firm boundary and I’m so miserable without a cat.

You are completely free to put a strong fence all round your garden long as it's inside your boundary. Your neighbour is under no obligation to fix his fence, but you can't remove it either. If your fence is in place, hopefully his fence will sag into his own garden and only be his problem.

Concrete posts and gravel boards will make it sturdier, won't eventually rot like a wood base

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/04/2020 19:44

It’s sagging our way unfortunately, if I have a fence put in will theirs push it over?.

Could you also get some strong netting put in along the entire fence, but behind your new fence so it stops it sagging further? It might be overkill, and it depends if you can make do with losing an extra bit of the garden.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/04/2020 20:53

I don’t know, I think I need a fencing contractor to quote me for a new fence,I suppose then the fence would sag the other way.

Losing inches doesn’t bother me.

Is it the post that’s rotting? If so you can get a short concrete post - can’t remember what it’s called but it’s concreted into the ground and bolted to the wooden post. We have a few of them. Think they cost us about £40 fitted.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/04/2020 21:00

Yes it’s the post. One of ours is going too.

Did you set the short post in with concrete?.

As @ginisatonic says, you can get concrete supports that help support posts. Do it on your side and the should be no issue. Once that is done how do you plan on cat proofing?

Ginisatonic · 11/04/2020 21:02

Yea fixed in with concrete. Our fences are about 24 years old. Fence itself is ok just the bottom of the posts that rot first.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/04/2020 21:12

I’ve seen a system called oscillot, it’s an Australian brand.

Depending on the cat, you could try what I did and has worked perfectly so far (6 months so far). In fairness I have British blue, one can’t climb well and the other has no desire to climb! But it’s cheap and can be done yourself. If you only have a small part to cat proof you can get a fancy system but I have quite a lot of fence so prices of these systems ended up extortionate! So, what did we do? Got a load of guttering down pipe and applied it to the fence. Using gutter fixings, the gutter pipe sits out from the fence and makes it impossible for the cat to climb up and around. Just an idea! I have a grey fence with grey pipe, barely even notice it and cost about £100 vs £5,000 for the other option!

Jojo19834 · 11/04/2020 21:28

When I say applied it to fence, just a long the inside at the top, not all over!

Jojo19834 · 11/04/2020 21:29

This was our first option, second if this failed was to get some round wood beams and insert into the gutter fixings so it rotated. No need, this has worked fine and keeps the neighbours cats out too as they don’t know what to make of it either from the otheriside!

EasterBuns · 11/04/2020 21:31

Are you sure a decent fence will stop a cat, it wouldn’t have stopped any of the cats I have owned (admittedly farm type cats).

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/04/2020 21:39

Oscillot seem effective, the top spins so the cat can’t jump up and grab on to the top of the fence.

@Jojo19834 I’ve seen that done on insta and YouTube but I don’t think dh would go for it. Could you possibly take a picture of it one day please?.

I’d be getting a Bengal again so it needs to be foolproof because their so intelligent. Little sods work things out quickly. Our chinchilla Persians didn’t question life so much.

Jojo19834 · 11/04/2020 21:50

A Bengal might be a different thing!

Jojo19834 · 11/04/2020 21:52

Here’s one I took for a different reason. I intended on a light grey fence, changed my mind and changed the paint. Lockdown happened and I wanted the light paint again, but I went with what I had. So I could have had darker piping if I’d planned it all properly

Picture didn’t load, take 2....

Garden fence.
Jojo19834 · 11/04/2020 21:54

And now it’s there twice lol garden isn’t finished, planning lots of tall grasses so will be less visible once complete

Easilyanxious · 11/04/2020 22:34

Would neighbour not let you replace post / fence anyway , even if I didn't get in with my neighbour if they were going to put a better fence up at no cost to me I wouldn't object

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/04/2020 09:32

I honestly don’t know @Easilyanxious, relations sort of broke down and haven’t recovered. Our cat did make their cats lives hell for 7 years and it never occurred to me to cat proof.

I wish I had though because it’s broken my heart losing him at 10.

Your cat proofing looks very neat and tidy @Jojo19834.

Dh has lots of health problems now so I need to get someone in to do it anyway, regardless of what we end up doing.

Katzecure is a rolling post system but made in the UK, it sounds similar.

But honestly..... some bengals basically need a zoo enclosure if you really want to keep them in a space.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/04/2020 10:27

I’m hoping in the last 11 years they’ve got less athletic....

Ours was quite close to the original Asian leopard cat/domestic mating so huge and boisterous but very loving with me.
