Is there such a thing as a tall person kitchen?!

Ok, this is going to sound weird. I'm my defence I've been Corona'd for the last five days (not seriously) and there's been a lot of laying in bed musing idly.

Can you get kitchens in an extra tall fitting?! I'm quite tall, 5'11", and kitchen benches always feel about two or three inches too short to me. Washing up gives me backache because the bottom of the sink is too far away, so I'm bent over awkwardly the whole time. I'm guessing the standard bench height / under counter cupboard height is designed to fit shorter, average height women (because kitchens are for womaning in, obvs) which is why they don't work for me.

We will hopefully be knocking through / extending and creating a new kitchen diner from scratch in a few years. Can you get kitchens made taller? Or is it just one standard height and lump it? I guess a totally bespoke kitchen would be made however you want it but assuming you don't have bespoke kitchen money, is it possible? Or am I doomed to endure a minor worktop height annoyance forever?

I'd quite like the extra two inches cupboard space too.

Any other tall people have a kitchen that fits?!

@mencken that is a great list, thank you!

My last kitchen was ikea but I had the units built up a little higher.

I will do so again, I'm not that tall at 5 foot 7 but I find having the worktop a little higher really helps with backache and its so easy to get your fitter to do it.

The advice above is brill.

Yes ours was a hand built bespoke kitchen and everything is higher. Built by the previous owners who were tall, Dh and I average height so it's a bit of a pita!

The house in this article had an extra drawer added under the worktop to raise it up a bit, might be an option although it doesn’t say where the kitchen is from so how practical that is with a standard manufacturer I don’t know whether that’s only if you get it bespoke...

My kitchen has a fairly low ceiling. I have to use a stepstool to use the wall cupboards. I'm the average height for a woman.

The answer is yes. Worktops are usually set for what is suitable for an average height woman.

Some people build a frame out of timber and mount the cabinets on that, others just adjust the feet to a higher level. Totally doable. Find out what feels comfortable by stacking up some books and pretend to chop, seriously, work out how high you want your cabinets raised by.

Dh is 6'3" and has smacked his head many a time in a previous house where the cooker hood was not in line with the cabinets. You pulled it out to activate the extractor fan. Worst design feature ever. We had a new kitchen fitted here, the fan is integrated into the wall cabinet and in line with all the other wall cabinets.
