Need a makeshift fence

Burnbabyburn1 · 05/04/2020 16:08

My current back door gates have come of. They can’t be put back on as they need another hinge and some repair. I live alone so any repairs are a bit hard. I need some privacy because people could walk past and see inside my house.

Any ideas what I can use? I contacted someone on NextDoor who does gates, and he got my address and then ignored me lol.

You can still get hinges through the post and I think hardware shops are still open, if you know how to put them on?

I’m taking it the gate and fence is wood? So you could screw it on. If metal you’d need to weld so you’d prob need someone with that equipment?

Could you tie the gate on somehow with washing line or wire if you can’t screw the gate on yourself? Or nail up an old curtain or old rug or something you don’t care about in the gap between the gate posts?

PigletJohn · 05/04/2020 22:27

you could board up the gateway. Does it have wooden gateposts? What is the width and the height?

Will you ever need to go through it while it is boarded up?

Some photos would help.

have you got a hammer, a screwdriver and a tape measure?

wowfudge · 06/04/2020 08:17

You can buy reed screening, etc online and you could tie that on using cable ties or string if feasible. Can the gates be propped up and temporarily held in place somehow to cover most of the gap?

Burnbabyburn1 · 06/04/2020 10:59

Hey,

So I can’t do any repairs to the current gate because it’s 1.3m wide, heavy and requires another hinge. I don’t think the hinge can be fixed to the current post.

@PigletJohn yes it has my car in the drive so I occasionally need to get in and out.

The gap is 2.7 metres wide and i would prefer the heigh to be 2 metres.....

My issue about using bed sheets or tarpaulin is that it may blow away.

There is a concrete block on either side of the opening.

with no wooden posts it will be difficult to screw anything up. Can you take photos please of each side, and what the hinges attach(ed) to, and on your old gate as well, and of the hinges (both parts, if separated)

Have you got a hammer drill?

Would this work?

doubt it. No posts.

SoloMummy · 06/04/2020 21:18

Just use curtains?

ThePurplePeopleEater · 07/04/2020 13:04

I need the same as a temporary, fence panel completely gone between me and next door. Until I can get a replacement panel any suggestions are greatly received Grin

PigletJohn · 07/04/2020 14:05

Tell us the dimensions of the gap, what is at each side of it (e.g. fenceposts) and if you will need access once blocked. Photos will help. Do you have a drill?

ThePurplePeopleEater · 07/04/2020 15:23

Mine is 6ft x 6ft, between the back of my house and next door. No need for access, it’s a boundary fence. I have a drill. Been looking everywhere for replacement panels but no one seems to be delivering in the current climate.

PigletJohn · 07/04/2020 15:55

a panel is difficult to carry. Although reasonably light, it will try to fly away from a roof rack, and won't fit in a car.

If you have wooden posts either side, and can use a saw, you may be able to buy a couple of decking boards. These are very light and easy to carry. Budget versions will do. You can screw these to your existing fence posts, one at the top and one about a foot up from the bottom, and fill between them with whatever you can get. Even pallets would do (but you will need a central board as well for short pieces). If you find a DIY shed willing to cut boards to a size that will fit in your car, you could use OSB pieces and screw through them into the horizontal boards. Sheet materials usually come in pieces 2440x1220mm (smaller pieces are more expensive) so you would need two. Ply is unsuitable because if rain and damp penetrate the edges, it will peel apart. The bigger the pieces are, the more rigid it will be. It will be stronger than your old fence panels.

If you still have the remains of your old panel, you could screw through its battens it to the horizontal boards I describe.

If you can get decking boards delivered at an attractive price, you can use them as planks between your posts, and screw them horizontally to board the whole gap. This makes a very strong fence, and the size and weight of each individual board makes it very easy to build. You will need about 14 boards. A budget range or seconds will do since you will not be standing on them. Avoid long boards as you will have to cut them and there will be waste.

This is a cheap one www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Deck-Board---25mm-x-120mm-x-1-8m/p/145255 but check it is long enough to span over bothfence posts or you will need brackets and the longer one will be better www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Deck-Board---25mm-x-120mm-x-2-4m/p/114551

There may be a decking merchant or woodyard local to you that is open.

You will need some fence stain to make the job look decent. Preferably a dark colour which will hide rough work.

If this appeals, come back and I will tell you more about the screws and drill you will need. You will need a spirit level for the bottom board.
