Annie Sloan paint is brilliant. It’s designed for upcycling.

You need to block out the orange colour weeping through in the future. So use a very good colour stop and undercoat. F&B are also worth looking at. Sand the surface and deal with any knots too.

Frenchic paint is fantastic! No prep needed apart from sugar soap. I did use Annie Sloan in the past but Frenchic is far more versatile. So far I’ve painted kitchen cabinet, dresser and coffee table! Join the Facebook group lots of tips and tricks there.

We used a Knot block paint first as an undercoat and it worked really well.

I used white rustoleum straight onto knotty yellow pine furniture and it looks fantastic. No sanding or priming and a year later it still looks as good as when I’d first done it

What's the finish on the chest of drawers? Is it waxed or varnished? I've used Zinsser primer then painted with satinwood paint a number of times. It's great if you are changing from an oil based to water based finish and the shellac based one will seal knots.

wehaveafloater · 05/04/2020 07:30

I'm terrible, I just use whatever paint I have to handabd slap it on.
But my dad would say sand, seal the knots, undercoat, light sand, two top coats .

MollyMossy · 05/04/2020 07:39

Frenchic paint is amazing! Do the prep correctly - light sand and clean with sugar soap - and then use the thinnest coats to get a perfect finish. Really recommend checking out the Frenchic fan forum on Facebook for inspiration.

It’s varnished.

wowfudge · 05/04/2020 08:49

@Perfidy are you the OP posting with a different name? If it's varnished I'd use the Zinsser shellac primer then two coats of satinwood paint in the colour of your choice. The Rustoleum furniture paint in satin finish is very hard-wearing one. You'll need methylated spirits for cleaning up. If the drawers have knobs, remove these before you paint it. Use a small gloss roller for most of the work and a small brush. You can either prime and paint the knobs or fit new ones, in ceramic, glass/acrylic or metal to match the decor in the room you're going to use it in.

I did this. It worked really well. I bought a little electric sander and added it down. I then primed it in white and painted in a light grey Dulux furniture paint. Finished it off with little decorative ceramic knobs. It looks lovely.
