Anyone had a front porch built before?

Been toying with the idea for a while. Need more space as this is something my house is limited in. I don't really want to move as location is ideal - 3 bed semi in a lovely area and house prices have rocketed, I'm effectively priced out of the area if I move.

Can you tell me your experiences of having a porch built? Price, time frame etc and anything else relevant. Many thanks.

No helpful info but placemarking as we'd like to do the same! Hoping we could do a bit of the work ourselves to save money, if anyone has experience of that??

We've added a porch to our extension plans although we won't be adding it just yet. Turned out we didn't need planning permission on that part but I'd check your borough planning portal to see if you would (e.g. conservation area etc.).

Do you plan to build an external porch that retains the current front door, ending up with two doors, or build a porch and then knock out the current front door? If the latter it will be a fair bit more expensive if you need a lintel. You'll also need to consider how the new flooring would meet the old.

We did it. We kept the original front door and so now have a front door into the porch and one from the porch into the house. This meant we didn’t need building regs approval (as long as it’s not connected to your house heating system), and because it’sa certain distance away from the road and less than 3m2 and less than 3m high we didn’t need planning permission. I did the drawings for it myself. I can’t remember the exact cost now but from memory it was £3-4K (brick and render, flat roof, composite front door with side light, grey upvc window, outside light, limestone floor). I absolutely love it, it looks good and gives somewhere to store kids scooters and shoes and is helpful for deliveries!

We had a porch built. 60s style bungalow (now extended) with weird door sizes and a drafty front door. It was actually cheaper to have a porch built in front of it than to replace the door. It was a good decision as its reduced drafts and makes post easier (when we were both out working all day).
