Cold water pipe leak help please?

The cold water pipe under our sink which supplies water to the washing machine is leaking.
It's at the point where the plastic pipe valve? meets the metal one with the stop lever.

Pictures attached.

Is there anything we can do other than replacing the whole pipe? - it runs behind the integrated fridge to the integrated washing machine so a PITA.

I'm in desperate need to wash towels/bedding but can't do it as the leak is so bad I would have to sit by the sink and replace the bowl every 5 mins when I run the machine which is impossible with two DCs around.

Help please?

please post a pic with a pencil tip or something showing where the water is coming out.

Is it the joint between the hose and the valve? Or the valve? Or the metal pipe?

letsjog · 02/04/2020 12:15

Sorry not great at this.
It's where the white plastic valve meets the metal valve.

I can't see the gauze filter in the end of your pipe connector. Has it been lost? How long ago was the machine fitted, and when did it start leaking? Have you disturbed anything?

lifeisgoodmostofthetime · 02/04/2020 12:24

Have you tried to tighten it? Pliers could do the job. Otherwise if it still leaks you will have to replace the washer. You can buy a pack of different sizes or take that one out and go to your local diy plumbing store

filter is like these and includes a rubber washer so fit would be loose without it. Factory filters often have white nylon gauze, not metal.

It's been like this for about 4 years and never been disturbed.
I've given the cupboard a good clean out when the leak started and there wasn't anything in there that could've been a part of the pipe work.

I can't see a white plastic valve. There is a white plastic collar, that screws onto the metal valve. Provided it has a washer, you should be able to tighten it to seal with rubber gloves for grip. If there is no washer, the collar can hit the body of the valve before it is fully screwed home.

letsjog · 02/04/2020 12:29

Sorry I mean where the collar meets the valve - as you can tell I don't really know much about DIY.

We've tried to tighten it but it seems to have got worse after we put it back on.

Often these pipes need a gentle wiggle whilst tightening. As others have said the washer could be split / compressed - they are cheap in tool station or screwfix. As a quick bodge you could try applying silicone sealant or anything similar until you can get a replacement washer. Similarly you could cut a new washer from any piece of rubber matting.

PigletJohn · 02/04/2020 12:32

p.s.

you have to line up the L-shaped plastic pipe on the end, into the valve, so it is straight, before you screw on the collar. Your L-shape end looks like it might not be on straight.

I'd order some some washers if I were you. I think hardware stores like Wilko sell them, as do DIY sheds, but for the price, I'd order some online first, then go cruising round the shops.

The best way is to replace the hole pipe as they dont last for ever.
You can get different lengths
www.screwfix.com/p/washing-machine-hose-blue-1-5m-x/43260
You might be able to carefully remove the black seal from the end of the hose and cut one out of a thin piece of leather or rubber sheet.
Or remove it from at the new hose.
As a quick fix the valve with the blue knob on is a isolator, remove the hose, wrap about 10 turns of PTFE tape around the threads and tighten it might slow it down or stop it
www.screwfix.com/p/ptfe-tape-12m-x-12mm/76841
Look at this
At about 2.03 when he explains about leaving the tape slightly back from the end dont, you want the tape hanging over the edge so once the tape is on the excess on the end can be folded over so when you tighten it up it helps for a seal with the black rubber washer.
I hope this makes sense?

Just check the hose or the plastic bit you turn isn't split. if it is its anew hose, but the PTFE job usually works

Muchlywrong · 03/04/2020 20:34

It may be best to check that you aren't cross threading the screw as you put it back on to the tap. Quite a regular occurrence. If you haven't ruined it too badly, you can get it back on to the tap properly. If you have cross threaded the hose, you will very likely need a new one. Just make sure you turn the new screw cap the wrong way and you'll hear it click when it sets into the right place
