Any possibility to relax SDLT charges

Hi all

Given that we are going through the terrible times of COVID, this health pandemic will surely followed by deep & prolonged economic recession.

I haven't heard any measures announced by Govt. to relax the SDLT charges and timeframe for paying the same. Surely at this time it's better for people to have cash in hand more than ever.

Yesterday, Govt made announcements on home moving, but nothing related to SDLT charges. I feel they must announce measures to help people to

  1. reduce SDLT rates
  2. payment holiday
  3. spread out the payment on instalment basis.

Any thoughts from this forum in this matter.
Can we do anything in this matter.

I think the government will need the revenue for right now.

I suspect the fact they've more or less suspended the housing market means that there will be fewer people paying SDLT, so this might not be a priority unfortunately

I can’t see why they will stop SDLT to be honest.

But I think they need to review house moves in general. I bought and sold 4 weeks ago. We had instructed solicitor and searches have been started. If the chain collapses due to a prolonged delay we will all incur charges.

I appreciate the need to minimise contact but so much can be done on line now.

Agreed they can't waive off the SDLT completely, but in these times on uncertainty with job losses etc, I feel its important to have cash in hand for any emergency.
I'm in process of buying, the completion likely will now get delayed. But I have to shell out a hefty amount for the SDLT. Worried about job stability etc, I feel if I can retain the extra cash for the time being will be helpful.
I wonder if they can offer deferred payment or instalment payment.
