Coronavirus - are you cancelling building work?

We're nearly finished an extension. Builders can carry on with a lot of work outside but would you cancel the guys coming in to lay flooring etc?

Our neighbour has builders in at the moment. Pneumatic drilling for three weeks so far. It’s not fun as we’ve been in isolation for the past week or so. I don’t envy her having no kitchen while on lockdown - she doesn’t normally live there as I think it’s long term investment doing it slowly over a few years and has accommodation with an employer. However it’s also no fun as a family of four listening to constant drilling and banging and is clearly breaking the lock down rules of no visitors. It’s tricky. We were hoping to do a bit more work and sell this year, unlikely now.

Our window/door job has been postponed until after the lockdown (date not scheduled in yet).

My brother is hoping that his kitchen sink will be delivered on Thursday and will be fitted along with the rest of his kitchen. It won't be much fun without a kitchen for three months. Currently it's an empty shell.

I have just postponed our painter who was supposed to be coming next Monday.

I feel bad for making life harder for a small business but a painted kitchen isn’t a priority right now. There are much bigger things to worry about.

Hopefully we can reschedule in a month or two when things are clearer.

It's honestly getting ridiculous. I'm at one of the builders merchants that's still open and there are queues of 15+ vans outside that have been waiting for 30+ minutes.

Our trade counter has about 15 people crammed together (no social distancing possible here) and no PPE in sight; the phones are ringing off the hook and the guys are still taking cash payment.

A good 50% of the people buying are just retail customers planning on doing their patio or plastering while in self-isolation.

And I'm in a position that could work from home but the company won't give us the go-ahead to do that.

madcatladyforever · 24/03/2020 10:36

I have cancelled all my building work and interior plastering because it is not essential work and it is not allowed.
Only essential work is allowed. Boiler breakdowns for vulnerable groups, elelctrical fires and the like.
If the house is secure it is not essential work and the builders should be at home like everyone else like we have been told a million times.

We were supposed to be having a new kitchen installed, it's all organised and paid for. Oh well - I guess it will be postponed until such time as it can be done. At least they hadn't started ripping the old kitchen out yet.

wonkytonkwoman · 26/03/2020 07:39

Yes, I've postponed my planned work too. Other things to focus on.

We had just taken on a rental to move into while our house was rebuilt. Started moving in but it is all now on hold. Seems the only sensible thing to do, although the builder was really keen to continue. Paying for two houses for the foreseeable, such a waste :(
