Bathroom fitter has taken 6 weeks

He’s nearly finished. I’ve been sent to work at home. He’s still here. I think he’s just got the sink to do and he’s finished.

Did anyone’s else take that long? Like it’s a good job, but six weeks. He said three. I hope I’m not going to get stung at the end for extra.

I’m really anxious, my mental health is suffering at the moment and I don’t need a dispute.

perhaps the best person to discuss this with, is the bathroom fitter...

Manchestermanchester · 19/03/2020 00:20

As I said, I’m asking how long other peoples took.

@CyberNan That I called for. Sounds like you don't 'get' Mumsnet...

@Manchestermanchester Ignore PP. yes 6 weeks is a long time. Shouldn't have taken that long. Did you agree a set price or is he being paid per hour?

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/03/2020 00:23

We had one who said two weeks. Six weeks later he walked off the job and said we'd never be happy.

The next one took 2 weeks to finish it off.

Good luck.

HavenDilemma · 19/03/2020 00:23

*was uncalled for, obviously

KoalasandRabbit · 19/03/2020 00:26

Ours took a week but a small bathroom. Our kitchen was 2 months, bit of a nightmare, told 2 weeks for that but they kept doing other jobs inbetween.

Manchestermanchester · 19/03/2020 00:33

He’s working on it every day, he just seems to arrive at 10 and leaves at 5/6. I don’t know I’m not home.

I had an estimate which didn’t include the plasterboard or wall repairs as it would depend on the tiles being removed. Think that’s £300.

I’m just really frustrated. I want my home back. I need to work from home. I’m sick of showering from a bucket outside. I’m sick of going to the gym. I’m sick of trying to avoid him when I come home. It’s my home.

I know my concerns sound so trivial in the current climate. I’ve never questioned his work and he’s done a Very good job. I just question what’s taken so long and how much the final bill is.

I’ve also had an operation this week and I just wish I could recover in piece. But no, he was home. He was also at my house Friday.

Sick of it.

That sounds utterly shit OP. Time for a sit down and a frank discussion. During which you can state hours that work for you. e.g. work stops when you get home. But first you need a finish date and a reassurance on costs. Good luck!

Thisismytimetoshine · 19/03/2020 10:36

No, ours took two and a half weeks for an estimated two week job. Your situation sounds so intrusive, I’d be climbing the walls Flowers

Manchestermanchester · 19/03/2020 10:48

He said it’s the tiles, hexagonal - they took more.

LovingLola · 19/03/2020 10:50

Can you check what he does every day?

indecis · 19/03/2020 10:58

We've just had a downstairs loo converted from what used to be an outhouse so kitchen cabinets off, hole in the wall, roof raised and made into a habitable room then kitchen back in. It took 6 weeks but the builders encountered a few problems which slowed them down. Depending on the size of your room I'd have thought maybe 3-4 weeks maximum.

babychange12 · 19/03/2020 11:02

Ours was meant to take 2 weeks but took 2 months in the end

I was heavily pregnant with a toddler, and was such a stressful time so I know how you feel

They finished the work on a Friday and I promptly had the baby the next week! Think it was just to stressful having them around to have a baby as well

GemmaTellerMorrow · 19/03/2020 11:06

The people opposite us had theirs done recently, it took just over five weeks. Every time I looked out of our window or went outside I could see their fitter having a ciggie and a cuppa.

jackstini · 20/03/2020 20:49

Had family bathroom and en-suite done last year and took 3.5 weeks to do both

All fully tiled which the fitter said took about half the total time. 6 weeks does seem slow...

Manchestermanchester · 20/03/2020 21:47

@jackstini the tiling didn’t Take that long :/

Sammy867 · 20/03/2020 21:51

We had a massive job done. Double height ceiling bathroom which has large floor space.
A Stud wall was created to have a shower to appear to be set into the wall, fake wall behind bath to get a shelf with in built shelves into both with lights. It took one guy fitting plus an electrician 2 weeks to do. Seems like a long time to me.

jackstini · 21/03/2020 15:00

@Manchestermanchester - have you agreed a price up front?
He should not dare charge you more - I don't understand tradesmen that quote for a job and take twice as long to do it!

I think our fitting costs were £5,900 for bathroom & ensuite - fitting, tiling, changing rads, new floors, new ceiling, all electrics

Manchestermanchester · 22/03/2020 23:49

@jackstini was a little bit more due to wall. He gave an estimate not a quote.

I’m annoyed as I think he’s ruined my teak wash stand. He’s put a hideous waterproof seal around it but managed to get it everywhere. Look constantly wet. He also has chipped it in a few places. Agh I don’t want to talk to him about the chips.

Oh no - that's a beautiful stand too!

I know it's cringy but you have to talk to him - this is not personal, it's a business transaction and he should be doing what he is being paid for. Let us know what he says today...

Burnbabyburn1 · 23/03/2020 10:58

I know right. He’s chipped it as well.

Thehop · 23/03/2020 11:15

Oh no no no he’s damaged that and needs to replace it. His insurance will replace it.

Manchestermanchester · 26/03/2020 19:06

So I told him about it and he thought I was going to put oil on it. No it’s Teak so afaik you don’t put oil on it.

So what do I do? It’s just as bad?
