Best drain cleaner?

Our waste pipes in the kitchen have developed an annoying gurgle when they empty. I presume it's a fat blockage building up. I've tried bicarb and vinegar, soda crystals, Mr Muscle, taking the pipes apart and a drain snake (which won't go round the corners). I've also tried plungers.
What has worked for other people as I don't want to chuck any more money away on things that don't work Hmm

Caustic soda

Silbury1967 · 17/03/2020 10:24

Ooh I haven't tried that yet 😁

Kettle of boiling water, then soda crystals overnight, then a kettle of boiling water sorted ours.

Pour and entire bottle or two of neat bleach down it after a hot kettle of boiling water. Leave overnight another fully boiling kettle

Thanks, will try all of those 😁

Having to keep repeating all these costly remedies is just throwing money down the drain in my opinion

Ariela · 17/03/2020 17:05

Have you taken out your U bend and cleaned that out (in another sink of course)?

Silbury1967 · 17/03/2020 17:18

I've taken the pipes apart and all ckear. It must be further down the pipes where they go outside. I've tried a drain snake but it won't go round the corners.

Look for something called a pango. www.amazon.co.uk/Monument-Pango-Plunger-deblocker-Version/dp/B0001P0F6I?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
Does the job of moving thinks stuck in pipework, by air pressure. Takes a bit of getting used to, but unless you have an account with a plumbers merchant or access to hydrochloric acid drain cleaners, it does the best job.

AmberleighMouse · 17/03/2020 20:49

Have you tried repeatedly twisting the snake to get it round the corners?

We did the kettle and soda crystals thing with a blockage that was quite far down.

Silbury1967 · 17/03/2020 21:33

Never heard of a pango - will have a look. I did try a bit of twisting and fiddling but the snake kept getting kinked up. I think I need a second pair of hands to help me with it.

Go to an old fashioned hardware store. Not one of the bigs chains. Get some One Shot. It’s seriously strong stuff and they won’t sell it to everyone. Follow the precautions (gloves/eye protection) It will work first time and is about £7 for a big bottle.

Silbury1967 · 18/03/2020 14:01

Have tried two doses of caustic soda and 3 doses of hg drain unblocker. Two more suggestions to try and then I'm going to scream if it's still gurgling 😆

One shot is a fantastic drain cleaner, but getting hold of "proper" stuff as I said, is very difficult nowadays. If you are able to get some, make sure you wear a face mask, goggles, long sleeves and gloves. Also make sure that there is someone else in the house, so they can help you immediately if something goes wrong.

AmberleighMouse · 18/03/2020 14:31

Is it possible the gurgle is linked to something else, like the dishwasher? If you run a full sinkful of hot water then let the plug out, does it all drain away smoothly or does it drain quickly for a bit and then turn sluggish?

Smumten · 12/03/2021 08:35

I would really avoid OneShot. I tried it a few years back and it did such a good job it burnt through the pipe and we had to then get a plumber through to fix the leak. Also let off a toxic smell like no other. A plumber friend recommended it to me but it was bad advice.
