Problems with Dulux once eggshell paint

I’ve just spent the last two days prepping and painting our dark wood panelling in the hall. The final coat was Dulux Once eggshell paint in white. I painted it over 16 hours ago and have come downstairs to find the finish is still very shiny. Has anyone else had this problem? I was looking a for a matt finish and this looks more like gloss. We used Zinsser BIN primer underneath. Do I need to buy another paint to go over it to get a less shiny look?

That looks really lovely! It might need a few days to dry to get that Matt finish? If after a few days still looks very shiny I would suggest speaking to someone who works at the Dulux section in BNQ and see what they suggest, you can also ask them to do a sample and see how it looks after its dry? Was the primer for Matt paint? Let us know how it goes!

Did you stir it really well? The matting agents in paint tend to sink to the bottom so need to be really well mixed in.

The tin said specifically not to shake or stir before use, which seemed very strange. I used the online customer service chat with Dulux today and at first the rep said that Dulux didn’t make a once eggshell. I then sent a photo of the tin and he backtracked, then suggested it may take 1-2 weeks to lose its sheen. I’m not convinced though. It’s also very runny so for a once produce which says to apply thickly, we now have lots of annoying drip marks on the woodwork. Won’t be using again and hoping it stops being so shiny. Either way we are painting our emulsion on the walls tomorrow and will have to repaint the woodwork at a later date if it continues to look like gloss!

The primer is for all paint types and doesn’t require prior sanding. We’ve used it all over the house and had no ill effects apart from the hall woodwork.

That's very disappointing OP. I think it would have looked much better with just a little sheen. It's way too glossy.

Reminds me of many years ago when I decided to paint all the doors on our first floor - 6 of them. And I HATE glossing. They were in need of a new coat and I chose a Dulux white gloss. We were really strapped for cash and couldn't afford a decorator. It took me ages to prepare and paint all the doors which had panels [not smooth doors]. Within 6 months they had all turned bloody yellow!!!! Then we had to get a decorator in anyway...
What a waste of my time and effort.

I hope yours tone down but realistically can't understand how they will. Sad

I really like it! Not helpful I know.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 16:58

If it doesn’t fade down, but Dulux matt flat and go over it.

There's no such thing as a one coat paint. It's a gimmick. You should always apply at least 2 coats. Only then will the finish be correct. Also, several thin coats are better than 1 or 2 thick coats, plus, no runs.
HTH

Slewts, did the shine subside? I'm experiencing the same problem with the Dulux Once eggshell. I'm fuming because like you, I didn't want such a glossy finish. I'm painting over satin (which is useless and started greying in under 12 months) and the sheen difference is staggering, even though eggshell is supposed to be the more matt out of the two

Nice work op! Love it 😍

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/05/2020 07:24

White paint takes longer to dry than other colours, something to do with the high levels of titanium in it.

F&B dead flat would suit your house.

slewts · 02/05/2020 11:10

Yes I’m pleased to say the sheen has definitely subsided. We painted a cupboard on the other side of the hall last week with the same stuff and it isn’t too shiny either. I wouldn’t buy it again as it’s so much runnier than the satinwood we have used but I’m relieved that it’s settled down.

That's fantastic news! It looks beautiful, I adore your colour scheme, so fresh!

I'm finding the consistency quite good, although I must admit, if I'd realised that it was oil based, I wouldn't have bought it because of the potential to run and the drying time (trying to keep three dogs away from doors and architraves is a headache!)
