Which tradesman to talk to about a glass internal wall?

I want to get some quotes for creating a staircase wall out of toughened/structural glass (not sure which) in a wood or metal frame, as per the attached pictures. Has to be floor to ceiling, not just banisters. I can't figure out what kind of tradesperson I should be getting to tell me I can't afford it.
Local joiner? Not sure if they'd have experience of similar work?
Glazier? They don't seem to deal with the right kinds of glass?
Big fancy specialist architectural glass company? Surely too much for my little project?

Get someone who does crittall (sp?) type doors and windows?

theshellhouse · 11/03/2020 18:10

But I can only find websites for the people who make the windows? I think I need to talk to someone who fits them? So find a builder???

A glazier is what you want.
A builder can't help you, or would charge you builders rates.
You would only be allowed certain glass anyway, not much choice as needs to meet standards. There's a lot of glass there.

I've seen a lot in offices and schools maybe find one that does institutions. it's that type of look.

I would speak to a glazier or google "structural glass near me "

Double3xposure · 11/03/2020 18:20

I’d check that your plan meets building regulations first.

minipie · 11/03/2020 18:22

for metal these guys do it but I don’t know cost or whether they are near you (they are SW London)

However, if you want wooden frames (likely to be cheaper) you may be better off going to a good joiner - I’m sure they would be able to source the glass and incorporate it.

Thanks everyone. I've looked through some more glaziers and found one that I think fits.

@Double3xposure - how do I do that? Talk to building regs directly?

Thanks @minipie . Yes I'm in London.

You’re welcome. We had a glazed panel similar to this made by some joiners. Not a staircase but a room divider. Afraid it was done via our builders so I don’t know the name of the joiners but I reckon there are lots of London joinery companies who could do it.

Building regs - are you using builders? If so they will know all about building regs (or ought to!) At a guess, there may be a requirement to have a handrail on the opposite wall if you are having a full height panel with no rail.

Here’s some info for starters. How many floors do you have in your house ? It might not be allowed if it’s 3.

It’s to do with protecting the escape route in a fire.

theshellhouse · 11/03/2020 21:03

Thank you for the links @Double3xposure . They seem to say that I’m fine. Staircase is less than a metre wide so I can just have a handrail on the opposite wall. 2 floors only.

Searching for “joiner glass” and my area seemed to be the magic combination that unlocked some promising looking leads.
