Stockport/ South Manchester house move - help!

Hi there,

We're planning a move closer to Manchester due to our work commutes being a bit mad at present. We're lucky in that we're not restricted to one place but we need a bit of a hand with trying to narrow down where we want to live.

We've spotted a few homes in Bramhall, which we know a little, and also in Davenport & Chorlton that we may be interested in, but we don't really know the other areas at all, other than people seem to move there with confidence.

Any help/ advice you can give on these places would be great as we don't want to make a decision based on property alone.

Thank you!

they are all quite different areas so depends what you want -

Chorlton is quite edgy hippy and a bit more run down bohemian area - think guardian, vegan, reiki .. very built up area but loads of great bars, shops, restaurants etc

Davenport has some lovely houses but is very suburban - not many pubs or places to go out locally..

Bramhall is a mix of the two - good high street if a bit more conservative than Chorlton and I would say slightly soul-less but again some great houses around but at a price premium compared to the other 2

What do you want from the area? How will you be travelling into Manchester - train, bus or car?

Do you need to consider things like schools? Finally, what's a rough ballpark of your budget?

Chorlton run down?!? Confused hardly!! The 60s shopping precinct is ugly but it’s hardly run down!! It’s urban.

It’s very very different vibe to the other places you have mentioned.
What are you looking for in a location, is it green space/parks or a vibrant local area?

BluesideGirl88 · 13/03/2020 15:48

Thanks for your replies, they're really appreciated.

We're looking for good schools and transport links first and foremost. We're more than happy to drive to work, but train/metro would equally be fine.

We live quite rurally at the minute and although we love it, we want to have the option to walk to the shop/restaurants etc or at least reduce the amount of time spent in the car to get to them. We love green spaces, but as long as they're accessible we're more than happy to compromise for the right house and area. Top end of the budget is 600k; we really want to make good use of the budget and so more house for the money is preferable. We're a young family and just want to make the right choice as we're not planning to move again for another 7-10 years at least.

Thanks again for your help.

Chorlton run down?!? hardly!!

The trendy bits no but generally, Chorlton is and always has been very rough round the edges.

OtherVoicesOtherRooms · 13/03/2020 15:58

Look at Poynton, Marple Bridge, Disley.

soberfabulous · 13/03/2020 16:10

I lived in Stockport for ten years. Look at Heaton mood. Great vibe. Short train journey into the city (mush closer than bramhall) good schools too.

soberfabulous · 13/03/2020 16:11

Heaton MOOR!

OtherVoicesOtherRooms · 13/03/2020 16:30

Yes to Heaton Moor and Heaton Mersey.

wowfudge · 13/03/2020 17:12

Poynton is a commuting nightmare much of the time, even with the new airport relief road close by.

The Disley and New Mills areas are worth a look. Train stations serve both and you are close to the Peak District.

BluesideGirl88 · 17/03/2020 21:16

Hi all

Thanks for your thoughts. We did look at Heaton Moor for a while and it's still and option. We have some friends who live there and love it and others who don't for a variety of reasons but we try to take everything with a pinch of salt.

Any more thoughts on the other places at all?

I would second the suggestions of Marple/ Marple Bridge or Disley as you are looking for green spaces but a selection of restaurants and pubs.

HaveAtEm · 19/03/2020 10:18

Although Disley/Marple/Poynton are lovely, the traffic situation is a nightmare! All have train stations but if you are planning to drive anywhere, do it at 2am!

Davenport (where I was born 🥰) is mostly lovely (really check your google maps when Estate Agents use 'Davenport' in their description, as they often put that when in fact the property is in Adswood, which you need to avoid!!)

Bramhall is just a 'cut-above' and would be my choice, personally. Good schools, great small-village community, super bars and restaurants and a train station.

Chorlton is too close to the city for me, has a LOT of students (as close to all the universities) and is very expensive.

wowfudge · 19/03/2020 19:27

Ahem - you don't "need to avoid" Adswood. We lived there in a lovely house and all our neighbours were great. Like many places, some streets aren't great, but it's wrong to write an area off like that.

TinManc · 22/03/2020 06:59

For that budget, schools, community, nice bars / restaurants I'd look at Cheadle Hulme / Bramhall. Agree with comments above on Marple /Poynton, nice places but not great for commuting from.

MissLemon18 · 22/03/2020 07:18

Maybe look at Romiley - close to Marple but not as many traffic issues. Good mix of housing stock and good selection of schools. Close to motorway links and market has been fast there for last 18 months. If you're still looking at buying, might snap up a bargain in current climate and when market bounces back Romiley will still be a desirable area.
