Updating kitchen prior to sale

We've lived in our house for 6.5 years and haven't touched the kitchen since we moved. It is pretty basic - Ikea factum white gloss cabinets.

We've decided that we are going to put the house up for sale in the Autumn or next Spring so I am writing a list of everything we need to do to get the house ready and make it as saleable as possible.

One thing I'm considering is replacing the cupboard fronts to make the kitchen look a bit more appealing. But.... if I was a buyer I would be looking to replace the whole thing so I'm torn as to whether it is wasted money.

I'm coming down on the side of it not being, because if it is more attractive a buyer may decide they can "live with it" whilst they decide how to change (rather than discounting the house altogether).

Any thoughts or advice on this?

You are absolutely bonkers to think of doing anything to that kitchen for selling other than a clear out and some oil for the wood.

My kitchen on the other hand...

Northernsoullover · 08/03/2020 07:57

Fwiw, a navy or grey kitchen would actually put me off. If I was buying a house I would unlikely have a budget to replace the kitchen. I know they are fashionable at the moment but I don't follow home fashions and your kitchen isn't exactly 90's dated.

Op you were crazy to think about changing it, as it is a really nice kitchen.

Just declutter, deep clean and oil the worktops.

Good luck with your sale.

i would hate navy tiles! Leave it & the buyer has the option to do what they want with it. I was thrilled when we bought our house that the kitchen was really tired & dated - great to able to re do it as I wanted it.

looks pretty modern to me! New owner may want to replace the wood (life is too short to be oiling worktops) but you don't know. If everything is clean and working that's all that is needed. You'll certainly never get your money back, as someone said kitchens are very personal.

I would be very happy with that kitchen, and would live with it for years.

ChateauMyself · 11/03/2020 12:02

Clean
Oil worktop
Re-whiten the grout
Hide your —clutter— necessary stuff

Seeingadistance · 11/03/2020 12:45

I think it’s lovely kitchen! Much nicer than any that I’ve ever had.

A good clean and tidy and you’re sorted!

Hope the sale goes smoothly and quickly.

loveredskyatnight · 11/03/2020 13:54

Your kitchen is lovely.

Wingedharpy · 11/03/2020 13:56

Another vote here for leave it alone.
It's a lovely, perfectly serviceable kitchen.
It may not fulfil your fantasy kitchen but will be more than enough for someone else.
IMHO, ripping out adequate fixtures and fittings is up there with too much flying around the globe in terms of planet devastation!
I'm doing my bit for the planet by living with my 40 year old kitchen🙄
I'd kill for yours!

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/03/2020 14:00

I wouldn’t touch it. No reason to suppose injecting your own style into it will be to any viewers taste, and they’ll probably rip it straight out anyway.
It looks fine to me.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/03/2020 14:03

I wouldn’t replace that kitchen, it looks fine and really think it would be a waste of money as changing the cupboard fronts won’t increase the value. Fresh paint, de clutter and deep clean are the most important things.

applesandpears33 · 12/03/2020 05:19

I think it looks nice. It is maybe a little bland but that is good because there is room for someone else to put their own stamp on it. I'd oil the worktops and concentrate on de-cluttering.

PJsEveryday · 12/03/2020 05:50

Your kitchen is lovely. It definitely wont put buyers off that it's not navy or grey. As lovely as those colours are, they are not to everyone's taste for a kitchen .

Robin233 · 12/03/2020 06:18

Perfect kitchen.
Light and airy and Carte Blanche for the next person to put their mark in it.

Make sure you have pictures up to break up the white.

AlexaAmbidextra · 12/03/2020 23:40

I certainly wouldn’t be changing the tiles. What could be less inoffensive than white tiles? I’d be put off to see navy tiles in that kitchen. I’d want to change them.
