Do you live on a hill? Is it a pain?

Does walking up and down hill each day become a pain?

DH and I have seen a house we like but it's on a hill (don't know what the exact incline is) it takes about 10mins to walk uphill before it levels out again.

Would have to do the walk regularly to get to town/station. Will also have buggy with 2 DCs to deal with (but obvs. that is temporary until they start walking).

I live on a hill.
Put it this, way,,when it snows, no one is getting up.

But at least we are not at risk of flooding

Teresajune · 26/02/2020 21:07

It's not walking that's a problem, but cycling up the hill is.

Brexshits · 26/02/2020 21:09

Yes. It keeps you fit! I put on loads of weight when I stopped pushing a buggy up our hill twice a day!
The main issue is getting down when it’s icy either on foot or in a car.

OrangeSamphire · 26/02/2020 21:09

Well you get fitter.

Might be a pain if your DC want to scoot or bike straight out from the house, depending on how steep the hill is this could be problematic when small and less able to stop.

But again, temporary (for most - my son is a wheelchair user and I push him up and down the hill to the beach several times a week - I’ve got great glutes now 😂)

KeithLeMonde · 26/02/2020 21:10

Lovely views
No flood risk
Rubbish if you want to cycle anywhere though!

Never found walking an issue

Pipandmum · 26/02/2020 21:10

I used to. It was fine - good exercise! I'd walk a big triangle with my two in double buggy and last leg was uphill. If I was knackered at that stage I might take the bus, but with a buggy I'd often not get on (another buggy would be on or too crowded) so I'd walk up anyway.

Kittypillar · 26/02/2020 21:13

I live on a hill, although the city we live in is pretty famous for them so it would be hard to avoid living on one or on a route that avoids them!

It's a bit of a pain in the bum at times with a buggy and any other bags, shopping etc, but not too bad. The only time I've found it really tricky is when the weather has been very hot and humid in the summer. It's a good workout at least!

AreWeNearlyHairnet · 26/02/2020 21:14

We live at the top of a very steep hill (at least 15 minutes' walk to the bottom).

Pros are the amazing views, low risk of flooding, and a feeling of open-ness (not having anything overlooking you, I mean). It's also nice to leave the house and have a nice downhill walk to wherever you're going!

However, cons are that walking home is tiring (especially when pushing a buggy) and going for a run always means you finish on a hill. It has made me fit though.

We're lucky that our road is major enough to be gritted, so we don't struggle getting out in the car in winter. But pavements are dangerous.

StCharlotte · 26/02/2020 21:15

I do and I work down the steep hill. The quickest route is down a quieter lane. I walk down every day and back up in the spring/summer when it's light (get the bus when it's dark). Saves going to the gym!

MIL tells of a time when she was pregnant with DH and she would push a pram up with his two slightly older brothers. She's a woman of steel!

Brexshits · 26/02/2020 21:15

It’s a challenge in our family to get all the way up on a bike. DS’s celebration the first time he managed it was amazing.

StCharlotte · 26/02/2020 21:19

Oh and ironically, despite being one of the highest points in the county, thanks to over development some houses in our road have flooded multiple times and we've had a flood alert this week.

Fannia · 26/02/2020 21:19

It will be something like this OP. Ideal for little piggies.

Do you live on a hill? Is it a pain?
dudsville · 26/02/2020 21:23

I've lived on a steep hill for nearly 20 years. I loathe it. Sure, it's a but of exercise, but i do not like it.

minipie · 26/02/2020 21:25

Reading the OP it sounds as if you would be at the bottom of the hill not the top?

If so that’s like us. Pros, we are sheltered from wind and noise unlike top of the hill. Cons, phone signal is dire. We’ve never had flooding issues though.

Yes I do notice the walk up and down. However being at the bottom of the hill generally means you are walking uphill in the morning when not tired and downhill at the end of the day when tired... sounds minor but it does matter!

Kids like whizzing down the hill to our house on scooters/bikes. I’m still terrified every time.

superking · 26/02/2020 21:27

I quite like living on a hill. Pushing a buggy up it is definitely a good workout! The only time it's been annoying was post C-section, I wasn't able to push the pram up the hill for quite a while which left me almost housebound for a few weeks.

FATEdestiny · 26/02/2020 21:31

It's shit for garden paddling pools

Brexshits · 26/02/2020 21:34

Actually yes the wind can be stronger up the top. And it can be a degree or so colder. Often have ice at the top and none at the bottom.
Gardens are also a bit tricky.
But the views are immense and it’s lovely and quiet with very little passing traffic.

BentNeckLady · 26/02/2020 21:37

It’s a nightmare when it snows. I live in a town and my next car will be a 4x4 otherwise I can’t get off my drive even in the smallest flurry.

Pyjamaface · 26/02/2020 21:37

I live at the top of a hill, in Norfolk so I can see for bloody miles!

ChicChicChicChiclana · 26/02/2020 21:37

Yes, I live near the top of a fairly steep hill in a very hilly area. Have never regretted it. Even though this is not a flood area, the cellars of the houses at the bottom of our hill are flooded in very heavy rain, whereas we have been lucky not to suffer that. And of course the views are tremendous.

oopsdaisy · 26/02/2020 21:46

@Fannia haha! That's helped tremendously

@minipie the house is at the top of the hill, but good to know the pros of living beside one

Thanks for the responses so far hadn't thought about some of things mentioned like bikes and scooters when they're older. Much appreciated!

I quite like my hill and always feel smug when the roads at the bottom are flooded!
Had slight issue pushing buggy for a few weeks after c section but once healed it's been good exercise.

Walnutwhipster · 26/02/2020 21:57

I live at the top of a very steep hill but on the flat IYSWIM. I don't walk up and down it because I'm poorly. The biggest pain is when it snows or is icy because it's not on a main road so doesn't get gritted. DH or DC will go out for me but I'm effectively housebound in bad weather.

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/02/2020 22:12

I agree it is a pain when it snows , otherwise no problem.
