We knew what we were getting ourselves in to as it was an investment to sell. The previous owners had twenty something cats, a border collie and many caged birds.
Most other viewers ran for the hills!
I sold it after renovating but would have not sold if we could not have eradicated the smell permanently. Plan B in that case was to rent it out.
I feel for you, it is really awful and I felt it in my nose for hours each time I left the house. I despaired that we would ever manage to get rid of it.
Best of luck, it's definitely fixable!

I see

I am looking into the ozone generators as ours is definitely not as bad as yours and it is mostly one bedroom.

Can we stay in the house if we only turn the machine on in one bedroom and stay out of it for a few days? Or do we have to stay away completely? I am thinking with baby due in three weeks, maybe we'll wait till I go to stay with the grandparents this summer..

I recon with time and some work the rest would be fine. Good for us is that hubby works in construction so can do most of it himself..

Try the door frames at the bottom, cat's like to rub past those a lot waving their bottoms.

We had a cat that was nervous for a while and he liked to spray corners, like door frame edges and the corner of the couch.

It's horrible and once it's up your nose you can't stop smelling it Flowers

Yadiya · 06/03/2020 20:53

Will spray there in particular, thank you

Where are you? When my cat peed on my mattress I had it professionally cleaned, by a guy who’d also cleaned my poor old dads mattress ( he had dementia and incontinence). He did a very good job both times. He can clean carpets. He’s in Kent. I could pm details if that helps.

Yadiya · 07/03/2020 17:04

We are in Billericay, Essex
The guy I had over offered these services as well

I paid him £225.00
It didn't work

If the people were stingy and tried to save money when laying flooring they may well have left the old underlay down and floored on top. Only one way to find out, lift a section.

Buy yourself a uv torch. Under three quid delivered on eBay. They really show up the pee. So once you lift the floor you can use the torch to see if there is pee there.

Funf · 07/03/2020 19:52

Overheating electrical connectors can smell of Urine on older plastic fittings are you certain the last owner had cats?

whataboutbob · 07/03/2020 19:56

Sorry to hear that Yadiya.

whataboutbob · 07/03/2020 19:57

Sorry to hear that Yadiya. There’s also reports that Valspar paints had a problem with smelling of cat pee. Had the place been recently repainted when you bought it?

Yadiya · 07/03/2020 21:30

@Elieza I did buy one. It didn't show anything. The guy that came to spray had a professional police grade one as well- nothing much came to light

@Funf We did see the cats every time we viewed the house

@whataboutbob A few people have now commented on this paint, but considering they did actually have 4 cats...

They definitely do not strike me as people that would not change the underflooring.. But I guess you never know.. we did ask about a few things and they did lie, so..

If you get the commercial ozone generator you definitely need to leave the house. It's very dangerous. After its turned on the machine gives you a countdown of about two minutes to leave and secure the building!
I doubt the small domestic types would be enough to sort it permanently.

Yadiya · 08/03/2020 23:20

@Myfutureisland
Oh I see, we can make that work, but in the summer when I am away with the kids and just husband needs to find a friend to stay with for a few days. We can try painting in the meantime..spraying did actually help a tiny bit..
Can you tell me which company you used please?

It was this company that I hired from.
www.edge-equipmenthire.co.uk/product/dri-eaz-activo-ozone-generator/

You may need somewhere more local to you but at least you can see the size of machine.

Yadiya · 10/03/2020 09:18

I'll have a look
Thank you very much

Hello All,

Just wanted to say that it turned out to be the paint after all!!!
We painted the room and the smell is gone!! This was back in March and it is still fine!
I still cannot believe how strong the smell was from paint!

Thank you all
Take care
