Remove chimley and stop the leak?

I’ve got a leak from around the chimley area. With water ingress it’s sometimes not a case of it found straight down.

I’m the end terrace and the routers have suggested removed the chimley. It’s been capped and there is condensation at the bottom of the chimney. If I remove the chimney will it stop the leak?

It sounds obvious, but I just wanted other people’s thoughts.

Sorry to be pedantic but its Chimney!

Manchestermanchester · 25/02/2020 11:56

In addition it’s not spelt with a capital letter.

Furthermore if you express sorrow it means you won’t do something again.

A vented cap at the top and a vent at the bottom with the flashing replaced may solve the problem.
Sometimes the bricks on a chimney can be porous and let water in and then down.
Removing the chimney should stop the problem but the roof will need to be carefully patched.

ChicCroissant · 25/02/2020 12:03

I'd find the proper source of the water, to just say it's the chimney is a bit vague IMO. You mention condensation as well as a leak, any signs of damp in the wall that the chimney is on, because I'd have though a leak would cause that.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 25/02/2020 12:05

We had a chimney removed, sounds like we had a similar issue with damp and condensation. A builder put a vent in the outside wall and took the stack down outside and the the chimney breast down inside upstairs and then patched the roof. We haven't had any issues since.

Manchestermanchester · 25/02/2020 12:58

Yes thanks @fedupandlookingforchange that’s what the roofer guy said - bricks were pours and they were different bricks as well. He removed the stack because no more maintenance so it’s cost effective as scaffolding is expensive.

@Modestandatinybitsexy yes he hasn’t put in a vent but he should. You would expect them to do it?

@ChicCroissant yes the pot was closed so “rain wouldn’t go down the chimney” by the previous owner. That’s the only chimney would condensation issues. The other chimney is a working chimney but underneath the wallpaper is crumbly plaster. But the whole of the bedroom has crumbled plaster.

If the bricks are porous its probably best to remove the stack. You can paint it with thompsons water seal every couple of years as a cheap fix.

Anyone know what I can do with a chimley with a wood burner, the chimley is also bad

Strongmummy · 13/03/2020 08:32

MaidenMotherCrone · 13/03/2020 08:43

Starbuck8419 · 13/03/2020 09:37

You don’t care about spelling?

fedupandlookingforchange · 13/03/2020 09:46

The chimney needs a flexi liner to prevent smoke leakage.
Repoint the brick chimney stack, replace the chimney pot and lead and mortar flashing and finally paint the bricks with thompsons water seal. If there is no air vent in the room where the woodturner is, one will need to be installed.

BluebellsareBlue · 13/03/2020 10:00

Hope you get it fixed op. Things like this make my teeth itch. How can you not know it's called a chimney? It's worse though when I see people calling drawers draws, or worse Chester draws. Have these people never ever ever written these things down? If they have what kind of teacher wouldn't correct this?! Arg!!!!!

Manchestermanchester · 13/03/2020 10:14

@Starbuck8419 if I don’t know I’m doing it, than no I don’t care. Also phonetically it sounds the same. I have a learning disability so I do the best that I can. I also have spell check on my phone so it’s not picking it up.

@fedupandlookingforchange thanks. My post wasn’t clear. I have removed one chimney but the other one is an issue and it has a wood burner. Legally it’s all ok but I would prefer not to have the chimney stack but I think the stack is required. I’ll repoint in the summer, just wish there was another way not to have it.

OP posts:
Starbuck8419 · 13/03/2020 10:23

Phonetically it does not sound the same unless you have a cold.

IfYoureNotIntoYoga · 13/03/2020 10:28

Im sure I read somewhere it's actually a diagnosed issue that some people are incapable of saying chimney the correct way and actually there is some sort of Genetic reason for It coming out chimley!

Bloody annoying though to keep typing chimley OP.

Not quite as annoying as an ex friend who used to say Toosepaste! Instead of toothpaste. . .

Manchestermanchester · 13/03/2020 11:31

Chim-Lee

Chim-nee

Check Wikipedia and chimley.
