Shaver points in bathrooms

We are renovating a large house to use as a luxury holiday let with 8 bedrooms/bathrooms. Do you think we need shaver points in al these bathrooms?

quite a good idea, as lots of people also use them for electric toothbrushes. Overseas visitors will not have UK plugs. If you have visitors from North America they will want 220volt outlets, which UK bathroom shaver sockets usually include (they have an isolating transformer for safety, which is why they are deeper and more expensive than non-bathroom outlets.

You will need a qualified electrician to fit them and to verify that your bathroom circuits meet other requirements. They can usually be run off a lighting circuit, since UK bathrooms do not normally include power siockrets. Get the first fix done before tiling. You can get over-basin strip lights that include a shaver outlet, but IMO they look a bit shoddy.

I would say yes, as I use them to charge my toothbrush, but to be honest unless it’s at the very top end of holiday homes, maybe just put in half of them.

120V, I meant

Thanks for the advice. Can I also ask Piglet john, plumber has advised that we have a secondary hot water system to ensure that the hot water is instantaneous. Does that sound right to you?

meaning circulation of hot water from the cylinder around the pipes to the hot taps, with a bronze or stainless pump? Yes, if some of them are distant from the cylinder.

The pipes must be very well insulated as whatever heat they lose will cool the cylinder.

But they never work ! What is the point?!

BruceAndNosh · 26/02/2020 21:13

I would expect a shaver point in a bathroom.

Blobby10 · 27/02/2020 09:51

I put a bathroom cabinet with a shaver socket in my recently renovated en suite. Design is rubbish as you can't shut the door whilst something is plugged in and the cabinet emits a low level buzzing noise 24/7 from the transformer unit. If I was doing the work again I would put a separate shaver point back in it with a shelf underneath for electric toothbrushes

Southmouth · 27/02/2020 10:04

@Blobby10 we have a constant buzzing noise in our en-suite which we can never work out where it’s coming from. We also have a shaver socket in there, I’m going to have to go and investigate further now and see if the noise is coming from that!

Blobby10 · 27/02/2020 10:07

@Southmouth I queried it when it first went in but the plumber said there was no way around it - luckily if I shut the en suite door properly then it doesn't disturb me Grin Hope you find out where your noise is coming from ¬!!

My toothbrush charger buzzes when its plugged in.... I charge during the day and unplug at night as i can hear it in our bedroom!

PigletJohn · 27/02/2020 12:23

some chargers used to switch on automatically when you pushed a plug in.

I just looked and can't see any with that feature.

If you wanted, you could put a switch on the wall to turn the shaver socket off when not required. You are allowed a switch in a bathroom if it is outside zones (away from fixed bath or shower).

Thanks for all your comments, will be careful which ones we use and thanks for info on hot water system
