Kitchens! What do you wish you had/hadn't done when you got your kitchen done

Just planning ours. Two sides of a room (wider than a galley but not wide enough for a centre island). Dining table is in another room which is attached so you can chat to people when they are at it but does not eat into kitchen space, but washing machine and dryer and boiler are all in kitchen.

what a refreshingly honest post. Most on MN don't actually give a toss about saving energy or water (as anyone who lives near a school or goes where kids go will know) but it's quite rare to see someone who will actually say so.

if your food waste caddy stinks you are wasting too much food. Put out less for the kids.

sorry - I forgot, no-one actually gives a fuck. I will stop wasting electrons!

Happyasasandboy sorry no I haven’t and I’m not ICt savvy enough to upload it on here.

So
it is a double cupboard but half depth and the doors go right to the worktop. It has 3 shelves which can be adjusted either side.
Left hand has Tupperware boxes tall for flour, SR Flour, bread flour etc
Next down is dried fruit, coconut etc. Then next sugars. Then a bigger space which has my old pottery jars housing all plastic, all wood, all metal eg. Spoons, spatulas, potato masher etc.
Right hand side has less used foods like spare cereal, next shelf is lentils, rice, soup mix etc because I don’t have room for them elsewhere.
Next shelf is cake decorating so fondant icing, cup cake cases, toppings, nuts etc.
Then under there is a light so if you open that side it lights up both. Then my Kenwood mixer sits in there and the processor that goes on top and liquidiser. I had the electrician put a socket in so it is plugged in and you just move it forward and switch on. The doors concertina back almost flush with the wall on that side. So I can mix everything there.
Under the worktop is a double width drawer sectioned with two extending wooden cutlery trays ( they could have made me some) and they house all the baking things like cake testers, honey 🍯 sticks and my digital scales sit on top. Then underneath are two cupboards with casseroles and less used things. Plus cereal, pasta etc in the other one. The left hand drawer set houses cutlery drawer then cake tins and sieves etc.

I hope this conjures up a picture for you. 🥰 I love it.

Mine worked out pretty well!

Everyone must haves: Pan drawers, pullout bin on rails, power sockets scattered widely and appropriately, well placed lighting so you don't shadow where you're prepping, double or 1.5 sink.

Essential for me personally: Gas hob, electric grill/oven and fan oven.

Really nice to have: Corian (or similar) with smooth radius'd upstanders - so easy to clean.

We got the washing machine out of the kitchen too, there's no reason to have it there if you have any other sane options, it just gets in the way and wastes good drawer/cupboard/machine space.

I really feel I must emphasize that drawers are a million billion trillion times better than cupboards for the under-counter storage. Cupboards just suck so much in comparison.

I put my washing machine and tumble drier in the garage so I had more space for my pan drawers, wine beer fridge and dishwasher.

Best decision I ever made.

Two dishwashers... that's the thing I want!

Double3xposure · 01/03/2020 09:54

I have two dishwashers

Best thing ever, if you have a large family and you cook. Probably a waste of space if there’s two of you and you live off microwave meals.

You need less dish storage because everything is either in use or in one dishwasher. And it’s not much dearer to install as you need one less unit. Plumbing costs are only slightly more as you are putting them both together.

UYScuti · 01/03/2020 10:17

There is only one of me and I have a small kitchen but I still long to have two dishwashers
