We've just bought a 400 year old house and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed.

Sorry, that’s meant to say within a year or two.

We can only afford one of those plans straight off. The other will be saved up for and done before Christmas.

Anyone else look at other people's photos on social media and feel pangs of jealousy over their beautiful uPVC window frames and plastered walls Grin

isseywith4vampirecats · 27/03/2020 09:18

not windows but we were at the stage now where we could go and finally order our lovely brand new kitchen as my son has fixed the leaking window issues and now we have to put it off again due to the current situation I have a plasterer electrician and fitter all now stuck at home all three local self employed lads so would have been income for them in this trying times, I am beginning to feel I will never get my kitchen

Yeah, we're on hold with 2 walls down and a third to go ... the kids keep picking at the unplastered walls but I'm sure I could link that to the Early Years Foundation Stage and chalk it up to homeschooling!

We completed last Thursday so got in just in time! Unfortunately the planned immediate works (wall ties and chimney repair and removal) have had to be suspended due to CV and the knock on effect means no new bathroom etc. We can’t get hold of materials to insulate our room and build the stud work for the dressing room and en-suite, and the bathroom for it I’d ordered has been pushed back to 4th May 😭. Golden opportunity for DIY and no materials...couldn’t make it up.

Oh and this house is FREEZING. Original sash windows are beautiful but so impractical.

Yes 1920s bungalow but nothing had been done to it for a very long time. So far we have: removed polystyrene off every single wall and ceiling!, full rewire, new roof, repointed, new windows, new front and back doors, new kitchen including an extension, new floor boards, put in central heating with combi boiler, new bathroom next task the garden. All internal doors to be replaced at some point as they don't match but they're all solid wood so it can't wait for now.

We've been working on the garden as our works have all had to come to a grinding halt too. As a pp above, had a plumber and plasterer lined up, plus a couple of new sash windows being made for us by a friend of a friend..all will now have to wait for the foreseeable.

So any jobs OH can do which we have the materials for already and don't require any outside input have been pushed back up the list.

Yesterday OH was digging ou the flower beds and laying down the beautiful Victorian rope twist edging we found buried under the lawn last year! It looks fab!

Thanking my lucky stars that we moved when we did though!

Joans3rddaughter · 30/03/2020 05:03

Moved in November 2019. House is solid stone construction. No central heating. Heating is 3 electric wall heaters and 3 coal fires. No mains gas. Water supply from well in cellar.
We have some ideas about what we want to do. So exciting
Architect was able to do survey just before lockdown.
It has been so cold this winter but we have survived and now just glad we moved last year. Feel so sorry for everybody trying to buy or sell at the moment.
