Living in Chinley

Hi there,
A couple of days ago I asked for views on living in Leek and now I'm asking for opinions on what it's like to live in Chinley in the Peak District.

I've seen houses in both these areas and trying to weigh them up. The house in Chinley is closer to family (30 mins away and Leek house is an hour away) but the Chinley house is no bigger than our current house.

The house in Leek is 3 times bigger but is a lot further away. People have commented that Leek can feel remote as it doesn't have a train station. Chinley does have a station but is a small country village in feel.

If you know Chinley well, would you bring up a family there or is it too quiet?

I thought Chinley was that place on Trumpton or something similar!

Direct train lines to both Sheffield and Manchester, but the trains don't stop very frequently (have got better towards Manchester)

Good primary and in the catchment for Chapel High School ( offstead outstanding). There isn't a 6th form - most kids travel to Buxton, Sheffield, Stockport or Manchester.

good vibe, good pubs,

Lots to do if you are outdoorsy - several climbers, fell runners, adventurers live there or close by & are really welcoming. Good mountain biking out the back.

Supermarkets - Aldi, Morrisons in Chapel, Tesco in Whaley.

The best blackberry and bilberry pickings …

Missed the last question - there is a large number of young families as the primary and special needs school are really really good. Like most villages it depends on how organised you need your things to be.

The parents in our village generally let the kids roam as far as they like - so long as they can see the church. It conveniently keeps them closer on rubbish days. They all tend to be a bit feral, but happy.

There isn't a lot of organised kids entertainment, although there is a cyclocross club, Pennine Fell Runners has a kids winter handicap series and most of the villages have May Queens. New Mills - just along the way has a good kids Am Dram and there is a thriving Arts scene in and around the High Peak,

We brought our 2 up in a neighbouring village. I would recommend it. Although until they can drive you will be a taxi service.

I'd pick Chinley over Leek any day. We are nearer to New Mills and I love living here having lived from Stockport. Beautiful part of the world without being too out of the way. There's a real community feel around here.
