Tarmac, flagstones or something else?

Hello,
We've got a back yard that needs resurfacing on a budget. The builders I've gotten in won't quote me for tarmac for some reason, they keep saying that isn't the best option, not really explaining why not. I'm quessing it's either alot of work or they want to sell me something more expensive? They've suggested flags or composite decking.
My question is - is it the cheapest? I live in the north west and the yard is about 20m2. It currently has a concrete surface that is solid but not flat.
Any help?

Tarmac is ok when it is new but is easily broken by tree roots etc. Patching it will never match, so wont look good if you do.

Most builders want to do a good job that lasts, so they are probably doing you a favour in the long run.

If you really want tarmac get in touch with someone who advertises themselves as tarmac people.

Have you tried going on Gumtree or Facebook MArketplace for stone for the backyard? You would be surprised at what stuff people are giving way very cheaply.
Personally, I agree that tarmac would never last, especially in areas of very heavy rainfall.
It might be more expensive, but I think it will save you money and bother in the long term.
Good luck.

@PaulaSmith1 @BookishKitten It's interesting that you both say tarmac won't last. There are no trees nearby and the yard won't be getting much heavy usage - no cars or anything? Would the weather alone do such damage?
I would think people who do hard landscaping would do tarmac - is it a separate thing?

Tarmac isnt a pretty option even for a back yard, i would go for Indian stone or the composite decking, which apparently is maintenance free unlike the wood stuff and non slip.

The consensus seems to be against tarmac - but from a budget point of view, is it cheaper?
