Orangerie vs Conservatory and cost

We are currently debating and haven't managed to agree at all. What are the pros and cons and if you wouldn't mind me asking how much yours cost - or how much per square metre. I've seen estimates for a normal extension are £1600 - £2000 per square metre, so hope it is cheaper than that. It will be on the north facing side of the house, so not great.

At the moment, I'd like a space we can use year round and DH thinks summer use only because of lack of sun and additional heating costs in winter.

I have a 40 sq m orangery - two sides and roof lantern glazed, one side a wall, fourth side open to the house. South facing with underfloor heating and blinds. We use it daily year round.

It was built seven years ago and cost around £65-70k all in (builder + glazing costs), so £1,600-1,750 per sq m. You could probably add inflation to that now. We did go with a high end manufacturer though and opted for additional features such as solar glass and automatic vents.

FWIW I think proper orangeries are more expensive than extensions, but conservatories are cheaper.

Hi, the orangeries have more solid wall ( with no insulation) and roofing than a conservatory.
The Conservatory has usually a roof that is all glass whereas.
Both orangeries and conservatories tend to be colder in the winter and warmer in the summer
In general the orangeries will be more expensive than a conservatory.
The cost depend on shape, style, size.

Tbh I would choose neither on a north facing side. I would go for a traditional extension with a solid roof. You won’t be able to use it as a living space all year round otherwise.

We had a 15 square metre conservatory built a few years ago, South facing but shaded all around by trees. It cost £16000 but some of that cost was building up from the garden to floor level (big drop). The cost included steps down to the garden. It has a glass roof which is made of some special glass that means it doesn't get too hot and insulates it well. We have one small electric heater that doesn't need to be on long before it warms the room. We use it daily. Even on the hottest summer day it never gets hotter than the outside temperature.
