Pocket door width

We're in the first weeks of a large extension and planning to add a pocket door into the new cloakroom, so we've not built the wall to house the door yet.

Does anyone know how wide this wall would need to be? I know there are building regulations around door widths and understand the wall needs to house the door fully retracted, I just can't see how wide a wall needs to be. The plans show we have 1500mm of wall and I'm concerned it's not enough width...

I don't know the answer to rusty but we are having a kind of fake pocket door today I saw on TV. You build a bookcase to the ceiling, about 10cm in front of the wall that needs the pocket.

The door slides behind the bookcase and becomes invisible.

I'm having a pair of these doors behind a pair of book cases.

I would imagine it works out cheaper than a wall.

The Eclisse website will tell you what you need surely?

It's going to be between a utility room and a cloakroom, so unfortunately the hidden-bookcase option wouldn't work, it needs to be inside the wall.

I've looked at the Eclisse website but their doors are 91cm wide, whereas the doors in our current house are 75cm wide, so I'm not sure why they're so big...

760-765cm is the standard width of a door in the uk, this is because when everyone in construction worked in feet and inches it was know as a 2 foot 6. So your house has the standard width doors, really as a rule all internal door openings should be uniform (but it's a free country so go with what you like!)

You could have a false wall, and not a bookcase, to hide the door behind. Or a shallow cupboard to keep cleaning materials in.

If you're getting the Eclisse classic single pocket door, I expect you will want kit for a 762mm or a 686mm wide door.

Frame sizes for each kit:

762 door: 1625 x 2056mm
686 door: 1449 x 2056mm

Here's the assembly instructions if you're interested:

If you have 1500 width you'll need to use a 686 kit but also take any additional stud work in to account. That depends on what material your opening is.

Also recommend you get the additional anti-slam + soft closure.

One last thing.

The wall that the door slides in to... You will not be able to use this for anything practical such as coat hooks. That's true for either side of the wall.

Thank you! I'll go and look at the links.

Icepink unfortunately it's not a free country when you need Building Regs sign-off, as far as I can find there needs to be a minimum of 750mm clear opening.

These regs and door sizes you're talking about. Are they from part M? If yes they don't apply to an extension or refurbs -- only new builds or commercial premises.

If you need wheelchair access cool, otherwise 686 or 762 doors are ubiquitous.

Phone your local planning dept with a general enquiry. They're actually a helpful bunch.

PragmaticWench · 17/02/2020 21:48

Thanks @MillStone, they are indeed from part M, clearly I've read too much with too little knowledge!
