Buying a newly built house. Developer has put a very cool-toned grey carpet throughout - stairs, landings, bedrooms and lounge.
I am already not a great carpet fan but have had neutral beige coloured before and been fine with them. But this carpet is SO grey. We have oak and walnut furniture, a beige bed, brown leather sofa etc. I think it will look odd with our stuff. (“cool” versus “warm”).
I want to just rip the lot out and replace with engineered oak/neutral carpet but feel ridiculous ripping new carpet out. Plus it will cost a bit as well.
What would you do? I just feel really annoyed they chose such a ‘strong’ colour!

I would keep it and simply put some rugs on which went with my furniture. It would be v expensive otherwise.

TARSCOUT · 15/02/2020 18:48

If you have the money do it. Although I may only be saying this as everyone seems to be using grey just now and it is really starting to annoy me! Grey walls, grey doors, grey windows.....

wonderstuff · 15/02/2020 18:53

Get rid of it, you will be unhappy with it otherwise and eventually when you do get the one you want will wonder why you didn't do it earlier.

Lampan · 15/02/2020 18:57

I really dislike grey anything, and when I bought my house there was grey carpet in 2 rooms and on the stairs. I replaced it in one room, in another it was too new to get rid of and in good condition, and for now I’m keeping it on the stairs as it’s quite nice to not be too bothered about it. Plus I don’t hate it like I did at first now I am used to it. Since it’s new and presumably clean, I’d say live with it for a while and then see how you feel. A few rugs might help it blend in with your furniture while you decide.

TheMemoryLingers · 15/02/2020 19:00

I'd live with it for at least a few months before making a decision. Unless something is so bad you can't live alongside it, it's a mistake to make decorating decisions as soon as you move in, as invariably six months later you think of something that would have been much better.

edgeware · 15/02/2020 19:42

Thanks for the advice. To be honest what we’ve been quoted isn’t insane - buying big rugs for 5 rooms wouldn’t be cheap either! Bloody grey!

I had grey carpet throughout my first house and found it dull and depressing, especially once the newness wore off.
I’d be tempted to change to neutral in the living room as you’ll notice it in there more when you are sitting around looking at it. However I’d probably leave it in the bedrooms for a few years as once beds are in place you shouldn’t notice it as much. Feels a bit wrong getting rid of brand new carpet, ridiculous that the developers didn’t give you any say in it.

Alsohuman · 15/02/2020 19:58

Keep it, you’ll get used to it.

MikeUniformMike · 15/02/2020 21:15

Give it away on a freebie site.

NewYearNewTwatName · 15/02/2020 21:20

could you ask the builders to take it out? maybe they could relay it in another of their houses?

DramaAlpaca · 15/02/2020 21:24

Budget permitting I'd have to rip it out and replace with wooden floors. I can't bear carpet because it's impossible to keep clean.

BruceAndNosh · 16/02/2020 02:46

You're paying for it therefore the builder should lay carpet colour of your choice

somewheresorted · 16/02/2020 13:37

I feel your pain OP - I’ve just moved into a new build with grey carpet and loathe it! Big rug has been put down in the living room and I will eventually be replacing all the downstairs. Upstairs I can ignore a bit more... Give me neutral beige any day!

Thesuzle · 16/02/2020 13:49

It will be such a faff to move all the furniture later when you have grown sick of the grey RIP it out now

trickyex · 16/02/2020 14:08

I would try to have it changed since you are buying a new place, you should have a choice!

Mosaic123 · 16/02/2020 14:49

Try selling it on Ebay? The timing is tricky though.

mightybuzz · 17/02/2020 09:11

The house was already finished so we bought it 'as is' unfortunately! It's more common in some other countries to not put flooring / kitchens in new builds though because people like to choose themselves. Here it seems to be the norm that you just get what they decide to put in!

I've decided to take it out & replace with wooden but leave stairs/landing to sort at a later date.

somewheresorted I know right! Developers take note - beige please!

Alsohuman · 17/02/2020 11:03

I hate beige! Developers, please don’t do this. And please don’t put horrible beige tiles in bathrooms either.

iusedtohavechickens · 17/02/2020 11:06

I have oak furniture brown sofa and grey carpets, will add a pic with neutral walls it looks lovely x

Rip it out or leave it.
iusedtohavechickens · 17/02/2020 11:07

And another one

Rip it out or leave it.
seven201 · 17/02/2020 11:17

I've got a grey carpet in one room. I like it and it's a practical colour. It replaced the white carpet the previous owner put in through the whole house! That was ruined within about a week of having a baby. I think you should try living with it and in a few months if you still hate it replace it then.

PragmaticWench · 17/02/2020 11:36

Grim. I'd try to sell it or put it on freecycle whilst it's still new.

irregularegular · 17/02/2020 11:39

I'm not keen on grey either. Of course it all depends on your budget and what else you could do with the money. I'd probably compromise and get rid of it downstairs, but keep in bedrooms at least initially.

Rafflesway · 17/02/2020 11:49

Another vote for leaving for now unless you have money to burn.

We had a similar situation many years ago when we bought the "Show home" on a small development. Developer there had put maroon carpet through the downstairs, (apart from kitchen and utility), and we had PEACH leather sofas! 😹. The walls were papered/painted in pale grey. LIke you I thought it would look vile but once we moved in and arranged the furniture it actually looked ok.

We managed to live with it for 3 years before we could afford to replace but it honestly was fine and maroon most definitely would not be my choice.

mightybuzz · 17/02/2020 11:51

seven201 agreed white would be much worse!! I have a 2 year old which is part of the reason I don't want carpet at all. I have a distinct memory of cleaning a massive vomit off our beige carpet when my son was 10 months

iusedtohavechickens that is nice - yours looks nicer quality carpet though and a bit darker :( (I am loving the hoover lines)
