Has anyone ever moved their gas meter?

Hi there mumsnet property people, I have a slightly unusual situation in that I need to move several gas meters!

Firstly I’d like to move my own gas meter because it’s inside the house for no apparent reason when all the neighbours ones are outside the house.

Secondly – and this is really odd – our neighbours gas meters are in our garden! There are three terraced houses that used to be owned by one person. I guess she must have installed the gas for all of them at the same time. Anyway she put the gas meters for what are now four flats in an area of the garden that’s outside one of my bedroom windows. I don’t want to fall out with the neighbours but it’s completely ridiculous that we have their gas meters outside our window in our property.....

Sorry pressed it too soon… Does anyone know who I need to contact and has anyone gone through the process of moving a gas meter? All help gratefully received

I looked into it about 10 years ago British Gas wanted £250. So decided not to do it.

Your gas provider would be your first port of call.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 15/02/2020 16:55

Yep, you’d need to contact your gas provider. Is there anything in your deeds about the neighbours meters? That might be harder to solve.

LayAllYourLoveOnMe · 15/02/2020 16:57

Hi anchor. Not in my deeds, no.

When new gas pipes were being put in my street to serve a new development the gas company moved mine outside for me - they actually insisted they had to. They were doing some checks on the route of the existing pipework and found the pipe leading to mine was different on their plans. It was literally moved to the same spot, just on the other side of the wall (no option to move it elsewhere) and they fitted a box. It was all free, done same day. It wasn't the gas company I pay my gas bill to but the gas network company who supply all the services (used to be Transco I think, can't remember what they're called now). If you have no luck with British Gas or whoever your supplier is try and find out who provides the services in your area and try them. They might be able to help.

Oooh look, this is what I meant by the service provider..........

I did this years ago. I think we contacted British gas. But be warned, we were moving it to add a tiny extension on to our house, should have taken about 6 weeks. British Gas delayed it by about 9 months! Whe it is done it is a fairly quick job, but not cheap.

LayAllYourLoveOnMe · 15/02/2020 18:26

LILO, thankyou!
It does seem to be a case of service provider not thepeople that I pay my gas bill to. That’s good because if I am going to move the neighbours meters into their garden I’d be moving three at once as they converted to flats…

Be prepared to have a charge per meter.

LayAllYourLoveOnMe · 15/02/2020 18:39

Understood. Hopefully it will be less if we do all at once...

We paid £350 4 years ago. Needed the space inside as we converted under the stairs where gas meter originally was to a toilet so worth it sort of although it is expensive....

takeyourrubbishhome · 15/02/2020 18:44

Moving your own meter should be £500-£1000, there is a fee to the supplier for the meter move plus any internal changes to your supply you might need. It could be similarly costly to move the others from the front garden but best to speak to a solicitor

ChicCroissant · 15/02/2020 18:50

No, because we looked into it and it cost a fortune!

Casino218 · 15/02/2020 18:52

You have to complete loads of forms and pay a fee with your gas supplier.

cabbageking · 15/02/2020 18:55

Moving it outside we also needed a particular metal cover.
Cost was over £800, 3 years ago, so we left it and put in new kitchen that hid the offending item under the sink.
Fast forward and all the pipes needed replacing and new meters installing for the whole road. We had it moved from the rear inside room to outside the front door with the correct boxing for free last year. I was chuffed.

Pimms0clock · 15/02/2020 19:06

We have moved 2. Rough cost was £500/£600 for each - moving it inside to out and shortening the pipe run rather than extending it.

Contact your current supplier, they will give you the details for your gas distribution network supplier. You will need to book an appointment with them and they will come out and quote you for the work you need. If you agree you need to make payment before they come out and make the changes to the outside your property. A builder will need to fit the outside meter box prior to them doing the work (extra cost as the gas company won’t do this) and you need your gas supplier to come out and reconnect you. Finally depending on where you are moving it to, a plumber will need to fit pipes linking it all back together internally (more cost). It’s a job best left for the summer months.

Nice one !
