Seating on kitchen island/breakfast bar

Please can I ask those of you who have bar stools on a kitchen island or breakfast bar what overhang you have for legs. Our designer thinks 20cm is ok but I am wondering if this is a bit cramped.

30cm overhang is the usual recommended minimum. I think 20cm would feel a bit cramped, either your legs would be squashed or you’d be too far from the counter.

He is an idiot then. We have 30-32 and I wouldn't have any less. 20cm is ridiculous

If he is giving stupid advice such as that maybe bin them off?

Do any of you with 30+cm have 20mm quartz? I thought there was a limit for overhang for silestone/caesarstone etc

Ours is 30 and is perfect

Ours is 30cm with 20mm quartz. We had an extra support in the middle to hold it. I think any less would be too little.

We have 35cm I think, we're lucky to have the space for that. Our island worktop is Tristone composite.

We have 30 MM quartz with 32 overhang. It is fine but there is a limit of overhand but depends on how long the overhang is. Half of our island has an overhang along the length and the whole of the end. Ours is massive

Well, to be honest, I've zero overhang - no kitchen island or breakfast bar. But I've two bar stools in the kitchen and I use the fairly adequate worktop and sit with my legs spread on either side of the stool for a quick meal. Anything more substantial I use the proper dining room immediately behind the kitchen door.

I’m a kitchen designer working with all surfaces. 300mm is a minimum for me. 200mm totally not enough room.

We have 40 on the main stretch but at the far end we added a 20 bit which wasn’t intended for stools but actually ended having some and it is absolutely fine!

Oh no I’m an idiot, just measured far end to check and it’s 25cm.

Ours is 25ish I think. We wanted 30cm but then something happened and the fitter said not enough depth for our extra open unit. :( I wouldn't go less than 25cm though. You'll keep hitting your knees.

But it works great. Space for 4 stools rather than 2 (even though we only have 2!) We have adjustable bar stools as the height you sit at impacts the depth you need. I think I just googled it.

We have 30cm with 20mm marble (which I think is lesa strong than quartz). Told it should be fine as long as it doesn’t have eg an adult standing on it...

20cm overhang and I don’t like how the stools hang out.

It feels comfortable enough, but it’s the kids who sit there mainly. Doing our kitchen again and we are currently discussing this. I want a 30cm this time.

We've 30cms, I wouldn't go for any less. It's a very comfy place to sit, well used.

You have a rubbish designer. No idea about ergonomics. 30cm minimum. More if possible.

Thanks all. I will insist on 30cm then. The kitchen shop is saying we will need the 30mm quartz though rather than the 20mm for this overhang. Is this others experience?

We have 20mm/30cm overhang but marble not quartz. I would suggest calling a local worktop fabricator and getting their view.
