Student mum moving to York

Hi all,

I’m looking for some help please.

Myself and my two children are looking to move to York this year so I can undergo my masters degree at the university. Although the university has family accommodation, it is mostly if not completely, allocated from families travelling from abroad. The housing association requires you to have a family connection to the area and from what I can see, private landlords don’t accept students.
If I can’t secure accommodation, I will not be able to attend the university which is a huge let down for me, can anyone offer me any good advice please?

Thank you

Why don't private landlords accept students?
Do you mean they won't accept HMOs?
You are a family so don't fall into this category.
Or do you mean they won't accept you because your salary/funding is too low to make the rent affordable? You could offer to pay for 1 year up front (if that's financially possible of course).

would a flat like this work for you? its in Selby, but a bus runs between there and York (the 415 if you want to check out the route) and take around 30 minutes.

I don’t know why, I haven’t asked. And no the advice I’ve been given by housing support is that most don’t accept students. Unfortunately, I don’t have a spare £7000 to cover a years worth of rent as my savings have to keep us going through a move and until I secure a job.

I have no issue living a little out of York. I’m just seeking advice from anyone who has been in this position and how they have gone about finding somewhere. Thank you.

What do the University advise ?
Masters and PhD students with families are not rarities.

Not sure what gives you that idea
most 2nd and 3rd years live out
in every University town in the country

I would imagine they would be looking for guarantors or at least a reference from a current landlord and some job security.

You can apply and get a job before moving. I relocated to York and got a job before I moved there from Berkshire. I had to travel for the interviews but secured a job and then moved. My job offer gave me the security for the landlord to accept that I could pay the rent and move in.

Can you offer 3-6 months in advance?

Some of the areas around by the university that have cheaper rent are not great places to live so do your research. Especially if you need schools as well.

This is the information I have had this evening from a lady who advises on housing out of the university.

Go back to the University Accommodation Service. They ought to be more helpful than this.

Agree, most second and third years live out (I live in York and there are a few student houses on my street), so you have definitely been misinformed there.
