Swimming pool and winter query

LadyGAgain · 11/02/2020 20:23

Not interesting but bothering me.

During the winter should an outdoor pool (closed for the winter) have the pump on for a few hours a day circulating the water? It was fully treated before being "closed down".

Ours stopped working and DH says it's fine to leave as it's chlorinated but I am worried this is going to lead to a bigger problem.

Any knowledge as I'm clueless.

Thanks

No leave it all closed down until May.

Tronkmanton · 11/02/2020 20:35

Leave it closed, no need for pump to be on. In fact our pipes are disconnected to avoid frost problems. I test the chlorine & ph monthly (more frequently as weather warms up) & top up chlorine as required. If weather is cold enough it stays fairly stable. Don’t let it go green or you’ve had it!

We've had a pool for 5 years now - never once have we had the water circulating over winter! It gets shut down (with some drainage and the pipes are cleared) for winter and then it gets opened back up (around Easter) and the pump/heater gets started back up.

Phew thank you!! I think I might owe him an apology...
It's been shocked but not drained and it's clear and seems fine. Roll on summer!
Out of interest, when do you start to heat yours and what pump do you have/cost throughout the summer?

We turn ours on around beginning of April so that it’s warm in the Easter holidays. Ours has a polytunnel type thing over the top so not completely outside. It is heated by an electric heater (air source?).

Dancingandthedreaming · 11/02/2020 21:33

We turn ours off as apparently if it freezes when there's water in the pump everything goes wrong and breaks. We've kind of half drained ours, just doing what previous owners have told us to do. They were nutters though, thinking about it... Will get everything going in April, as have both solar and air source heating and it's in a ginormous greenhouse like structure. Can't wait!

You're supposed to "winterize" you're Pool usually around sept time. You drop the water level below the skimmers to ensure no water will freeze in the pipes. You should also put in a super dose of chemicals.
No need to run the pump etc.

Horehound · 11/02/2020 21:37

@Dancingandthedreaming the previous owners are correct although you don't drain it half full just below the skimmers is fine. Especially if your poo has a liner because the water pressure keeps the liner in place.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/02/2020 21:37

My parents have one and always close it down properly over winter to avoid the pipes being frozen

Dancingandthedreaming · 11/02/2020 21:39

Thank you Horehound, should we be checking the chemical balances through the winter too? Looks ok to me

Horehound · 11/02/2020 21:46

Nah if you've done the chemical shock it will be fine. Smile
We didn't put enough in last year and basically had a pond when we came to open it up again. Ours is super clear this year haha

LadyGAgain · 11/02/2020 22:27

Thanks all! We wintersized it and water level below skimmers too. Roll on April!!
